New York High School Basketball - Mt. Vernon holds off White Plains

(January 29, 2008: White Plains, NY 10605) Fans at Tuesday's league challenge between the Mt. Vernon Knights (Mt. Vernon, NY) and the host White Plains Tigers (White Plains, NY), saw Mt. Vernon's basketball squad hold off White Plains by a count of 48-41.

With the victory, Mt. Vernon upgrades its record to 15-1 on the campaign. The Knights travel to New Rochelle (New Rochelle, NY) to play the Huguenots in a Section 1 I - A challenge on Thursday, January 31. The Huguenots come into the challenge with a record of 8-8. New Rochelle lost 66-30 in their recent league challenge against Ursuline (New Rochelle, NY)

Next up, the Tigers play the Scarsdale Raiders (Scarsdale, NY) in a Section 1 I - A challenge, on Thursday, January 31. White Plains will attempt to upgrade on its 8-8 season record. The Raiders come into the challenge with a 9-6 record after their 57-41 league win over Mamaroneck (Mamaroneck, NY).

First Quarter
A defensive matchup in the first qrtr. WP's Aguirre and MV's Mercer were the only two who scored in the qrtr.
Second Quarter
MV outscored WP 18-12 in the second qrtr. Aguirre scored 8 and Mercer scored 10. MV went into half time up 6.
Third Quarter
WP came out in the 3rd qrtr and was very agressive on offense and defense. Aguirre scored 13 points in the qrtr through penetrations for lay ups and short jumpshots. WP went up by 1... and gained the momentum.
Forth Quarter
MV after having just played a close game this weekend came back in the fourth qrtr and clawed back. MV scored 17 points to WP's 9. Most of the difference came in fouls during the end of the game. With less than 2 min to play WP held a 1 point lead after a missed free throw by Shanyce Stewart. Stewart fouled Aguirre on the ensuing inbounds pass. Aguirre missed the foul shot... After two time outs MV ran a play and the ball was loose. It was picked up by Taylor Palmer who threw a pass to Mercer under the basket. She was fouled and hit 2 free throws putting MV up by 1. On the following inbound pass... Mercer was called for a foul on Aguirre. Aguirre missed the front end of the one and one opportunity and Duncan grabbed the rebound. The ball was brought up court and became loose again and this time Mercer was fouled. She hit 2 more foul shots, giving MV a 3 point lead. WP went down court and Aguirre missed a 3 point shot.
