Rutgers is the latest program to offer
DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) freshman defensive lineman
Shane Simmons.
The team's Twitter account posted the news on Tuesday that the Scarlet Knights have extended an unofficial verbal offer to Simmons, joining the likes of Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Simmons, a member of the class of
2016 Top 50 Watch List, was a highly-touted youth player who dominated at the sub-varsity level for DeMatha while seeing occasional playing time with the varsity.
He is a member of a talented class of 2016 at DeMatha that also features running back Lorenzo Harrison, a
MaxPreps Freshman All-American, and offensive lineman Terrence Davis.
DeMatha finished 9-3 last season, but returns as much young talent as any team in the country.
Rutgers continues its trend of jumping on elite recruits early. It offered freshmen
Jarrett Guarantano and
Rashan Gary before the season.
