, was upset on Friday by Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.)
in a 16-7 result.
The smothering Santa Margarita defense held Mater Dei — which came in averaging nearly 37 points per game — to a single touchdown in dealing the Monarchs their first loss of the season.
After a scoreless first quarter the Eagles jumped on top with a 32-yard field goal by Alex Ury
, and it stayed 3-0 until halftime.
Ury connected again, this time a 42-yarder, to put Santa Margarita up 6-0 in the third quarter.
Things appeared to be looking up for the Monarchs when a long drive was finished off by a 2-yard touchdown run from Dalvin Jones-Fa'avae
to give Mater Dei its first lead of the game, 7-6.
The lead was short-lived, however, as early in the fourth quarter Ury hit his third field goal of the night, a 26-yarder, to give the Eagles the lead once again.Kyle Sweet
provided the final blow with a 16-yard touchdown run that gave Santa Margarita the final 16-7 lead.
Mater Dei (7-1) will face another tough test next week against national No. 5 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), while Santa Margarita (4-4) will take on Orange Lutheran in the tough Trinity League.
