  • Joe Rose kicked a 24-yard field goal to give Anderson County (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) a 52-50 lead over Franklin County (Frankfort, Ky.) with just 14 seconds left to play.

    Game over, right? Wrong!

Lorenzo McCaskell fielded the following kickoff and handed off to Mr. Football candidate Ryan Timmons. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound speedster avoided the first wave of tacklers by cutting to his right, went back to his left to find running room and went all the way for a spectacular 80-yard touchdown as time elapsed for a scintillating 56-52 victory.

Franklin County coach Chris Tracy told Mike Fields of the Lexington Herald-Leader that Timmons' clutch touchdown was "absolutely, 100 percent, the best play he's ever made. That's why he's the best player in the state. You can tell people what he does, but unless they see it for themselves, see it live, they can't appreciate it."

Senior quarterback Logan Woodside passed for 300 yards and five touchdowns, besides making two interceptions, as the Flyers raised their record to 9-0. Anderson County sophomore quarterback Zach Carmichael also was outstanding, passing for 288 yards and four touchdowns and running for three more touchdowns from one yard.

    * Sulphur Springs (Texas) outlasted Mt. Pleasant (Texas) 71-65 as Buddy Ivery ran 24 times for 304 yards and two touchdowns. His cousin, Willy Ivery, added 108 yards and four touchdowns on just 12 carries.

Mt. Pleasant senior quarterback Montravious James completed 30 of 55 passes for 404 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing 15 times for 128 yards and three touchdowns. He already has broken the Tigers' single-season passing record in just six games. Junior wide receiver Kd Cannon caught 14 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns.

    * Emanuel Gant completed 32 of 42 passes for 493 yards and five touchdowns as Tempe (Ariz.) defeated Arcadia (Phoenix) 49-39.

    * Junior quarterback Will Grier fired eight touchdown passes (23 of 28 for 388 yards) to spark Davidson Day (N.C.) to a 68-28 victory over Metrolina Christian Academy (Indian Trail, N.C.).

St. Joseph's Prep will head to Texas next season.

Dallas Jesuit (Dallas) and St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia) have agreed to a two-year, home-and-home deal that will send St. Joseph's Prep to Texas on Labor Day Weekend next fall, according to St. Joseph's Prep head coach Gabe Infante.

Both teams had a hole to fill on next year's schedule. This season on that same weekend, St. Joseph's Prep played a road game at Cocoa (Fla.) while Dallas Jesuit played fellow Jesuit high school Loyola Academy as part of the Global Ireland Football Tournament, coming from behind to win 30-29.

Infante mentioned that he's been in talks with several other Jesuit high schools to potentially create an early season football event strictly for Jesuit high schools, similar to what occurs in both lacrosse and basketball.

The Jesuit Lacrosse Classic has traditionally been hosted by Georgetown Prep (North Bethesda, Md.) and Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.), but in the next two years will be hosted by Strake Jesuit (Houston) and Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) respectively.

According to Infante, the vision for the football event is to move host cities to different geographic regions.

He mentioned St. Xavier (Cincinnati) and Gonzaga as possibilities for 2014. St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) and St. Ignatius (Cleveland) would be other teams that would make sense geographically for the inaugural classic.

St. Joseph's Prep is currently undefeated at 5-0. With a wealth of underclassmen, the team should be even stronger in 2013.

At 4-1, Dallas Jesuit has looked strong this fall; the team's only loss was a 56-24 setback to Skyline.

The matchup next year will be the first time that teams from Texas and Pennsylvania have played since 2008, when Northwest (Justin, Texas) defeated Woodland Hills (Pittsburgh), 13-12.

    Lufkin

We're still several weeks away from basketball season, but two football teams from Texas put up a basketball score Friday night.

In a game that lasted around four hours, visiting Lufkin (Texas) defeated host A&M Consolidated (College Station, Texas), 71-68, in four overtimes.

Lufkin finished the game with 741 yards of total offense, while A&M Consolidated had 688.

Lufkin's Tyler Stubblefield threw for 562 yards and 8 touchdowns, while SMU recruit JaBryce Taylor finished with 14 catches for 259 yards, including two touchdowns, for the Panthers.

With the game tied 45-45 at the end of regulation, each team scored and kicked extra points on each of its first two overtime possessions.

Lufkin also got into the end zone on its third possession but, according to the rules, had to go for a two-point conversion. The Panthers failed the try and A&M Consolidated took over.

The Tigers scored yet another touchdown but failed their own 2-point conversion attempt, sending the game into a fourth overtime.

With the game tied at 65, the Lufkin defense forced A&M Consolidated into a field goal, setting the Panthers up for the game-winning drive — and it didn't take long.

On the first play of Lufkin's fourth overtime possession, Kendrick Mapp ran the ball 25 yards into the end zone for the improbable 71-68 victory.

A&M Consolidated (3-2) entered the game on the heels of a 30-28 upset over Lake Travis last week. Lufkin (3-2) came into the game attempting to rebound after a 45-14 loss to Longview.

Wayne Elliott, the referee for Monday night's controversial Green Bay-Seattle game, will return to the high school ranks Friday night.

After being a part of one of the most infamous calls in recent NFL history, it's back to work for former replacement official Wayne Elliott. Due to the regular officials returning to the NFL Thursday night, Elliott will go back to his old job — reffing high school and small college football games.

First up is Friday night's game between Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) and Austin (Texas), according to KXAN.com. Lake Travis (3-1), previously ranked in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25, is coming off a tough loss to A&M Consolidated (College Station, Texas) last week. Austin (1-3) picked up its first win of the season last week against McNeil (Austin).

Elliott was the referee-in-charge during the now-legendary Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks earlier this week that ended in a disputed touchdown catch by Seattle's Golden Tate.

While Elliott was not the official who ruled the play a catch, he did have authority, along with the replay official, to overturn the call.

    Hunter Jr.

After spending Saturday night in South Bend at the Notre Dame vs. Michigan football game, Torii Hunter Jr. committed to the Irish to play both football and baseball, according to his father and current Los Angeles Angels outfielder Torii Hunter.

On Sunday, the elder Hunter tweeted, "Congrats to my son @THunterJr for his commitment to Notre Dame to play football and baseball. #proudpapa."

According to his stats on MaxPreps, Hunter Jr. has 16 receptions on the season for 331 yards and 4 touchdowns in three games.

The Prosper (Texas) wide receiver joins Corey Robinson in Notre Dame's 2013 recruiting class. Robinson is the son of former NBA great David Robinson.

    Tyrone Swoopes, Whitewright

The first four games of the football season have been rough on Tyrone Swoopes and, therefore, rough on his team, Whitewright (Texas).

Ranked as the No. 4 player in the nation by MaxPreps, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound senior pulled a hamstring in the second game of the season. He re-aggravated it last week.

Team spokesman J.D. Henderson told MaxPreps this morning that Swoopes did not play during Friday night's 35-6 loss to Callisburg (Gainesville, Texas), which dropped the Tigers' record to 0-4.

It appears that rest is the only solution for the young star, who has committed to the University of Texas. In parts of three games, Swoopes has thrown for 555 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 460 yards and six scores.

    Max Browne, Skyline

CBS/MaxPreps national recruiting expert Tom Lemming recently unveiled the Top 10 Quarterbacks of 2012 on the CBS Sports Network (see video below). The list is headlined by Max Browne of Skyline (Sammamish, Wash.) and Tyrone Swoopes of Whitewright (Texas), who Lemming believes could eventually be the top two quarterbacks taken in the NFL draft.

Browne is committed to USC while Swoopes will be taking his unique skill set to the University of Texas.

The rest of the list features quarterbacks committed to Penn State, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Alabama, Miami (Fla.), Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Michigan.

  • Nine was the magic number during the past few days as a pair of quarterbacks accounted for that many touchdowns.

Senior Steffin Church threw a school-record nine touchdown passes as Kentlake (Kent, Wash.) outlasted Puyallup (Wash.) in a wild 76-55 shootout. Most of them were bombs with the distances at 64, 62, 54, 52, 50, 44, 35, 19 and 16 yards.

The 131 total points broke the South Puget Sound League record of 128 set in 2003.

Kentlake coach Chris Paulson told the Tacoma News-Tribune, "You feel like you are unstoppable offensively. But the same 11 kids defensively could not seem to stop anybody either."

Puyallup sophomore quarterback Brendan Illies held his own by firing five touchdown passes and running for a pair.

Some other big performances from across the country:

*Sachse (Texas) held off Grapevine (Texas) 69-49 by scoring the game's final 20 points. Junior quarterback Kent Myers completed 23 of 35 passes for 435 yards and six touchdowns, while running 15 times for 121 yards and three more touchdowns.

*In another high-scoring game, Mount Pleasant (Texas) defeated Terrell (Texas) 76-33 as Montravious James completed 27 of 34 passes for 442 yards and six touchdowns, in addition to running seven times for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Kaderius Cannon made 13 catches for 224 yards and four touchdowns.

Damion Moss accounted for all five Terrell touchdowns, two on kickoff returns.

*Overcoming interceptions on his first two passes, senior quarterback David Dessent caught fire to spark Cocoa Beach (Fla.) to a 70-21 rout of Space Coast (Cocoa, Fla.). He finished with 19-of-27 for 338 yards and eight touchdowns to become the No. 1 passer in school history.

Bowie shocked the state and the nation with a 38-36 victory over nationally-ranked Skyline.

In an upset of Texas-sized proportions, Bowie (Arlington, Texas) stunned Skyline, ranked No. 4 in the Xcellent 25, 38-36.

After leading most of the game, Bowie had to withstand a furious fourth quarter comeback attempt by the heavily-favored Skyline.

Bowie got on the board first to take a 6-0 and looked good for much of the first half.

It led 24-16 at the half and came out firing in the third quarter, as quarterback Tony James hit senior receiver B.J. Ebozue for a touchdown to grow the lead to 31-16.

Bowie scored again before the period ended and led 38-16 at the start of the fourth quarter.

That's when Skyline began to launch its comeback. Quarterback Devante Kincade connected with Lamont Johnson on a 60-yard score and minutes later, sophomore Malik Jemmison returned a block punt for a touchdown to quickly make the score 38-30 with only a few minutes remaining.

With a chance to ice the game for Bowie, James threw an interception to give Skyline one last chance.

That was all Skyline needed, as Kincade converted on a 4th-and-1 and broke loose for a touchdown to bring the score to 38-36.

The two-point conversion attempt to tie the game failed, forcing Skyline to attempt an onside kick. However, Edwin Freeman recovered the ball for Bowie to seal the victory and hand the nation's No. 4 team its first loss of the season.

Mayfield threw four touchdown passes to help Lake Travis avoid the upset.

Fans of Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) can breathe a sigh of relief, as it managed to avoid becoming another victim in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 to be upset Friday night. The Cavaliers received a scare from Round Rock Westwood (Austin), but staged a fourth quarter comeback to come away with a 28-24 victory.

With No. 2 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.), No. 4 Skyline (Texas) and No. 22 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) having already fallen, Lake Travis trailed 24-22 with three minutes to play when senior quarterback Baker Mayfield found Varshaun Nixon for an 18-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, but the Cavaliers hung on for the 28-24 road win.

Lake Travis came into the game ranked No. 9 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25, while Round Rock Westwood entered the game ranked No. 78 in the state of Texas.

Lake Travis jumped out to an early lead, scoring two touchdowns (one missed PAT) and a field goal in the first quarter to take a 16-0 lead.

Round Rock Westwood responded with 17 unanswered points to take a 17-16 lead into halftime.

The Warriors opened up the scoring in the second half with a defensive touchdown, giving them a 24-16 lead. Mayfield responded with a touchdown pass to make it 24-22, setting up his own late-game heroics.

Lake Travis (3-0) now sets its sights on a home game against A&M Consolidated (College Station, Texas) next Friday while Round Rock Westwood will travel to Cedar Park (Texas).
