  Maryville, Alcoa agree to Sunday football game for ESPN coverage

  The Maryville faithful will be able to watch the Rebels in person or on ESPN2 on Aug. 26 against rival Alcoa. The Sunday game date didn't deter the teams.

  College football games played midweek. College basketball games that start past bedtime.
  
  There's no doubt: Television is a powerful medium.
  
  The latest example comes from Tennessee, where rivals Maryville (Tenn.) and Alcoa (Tenn.) will play a Sunday game, which will be broadcast on ESPN2 as part of the network's coverage of high school football.
  
  As reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Aug. 26 game is part of ESPN's opening weekend coverage that covers 26 teams from 15 states from Aug. 24-26. Maryville has won the past two Class 6A state championships and has a 29-game win streak, while neighboring town Alcoa has won 12 state titles compared with Maryville's 14.
  
  It's one of the nation's grandest rivalries, but some wondered if the game was appropriate on a Sunday, when it would interfere with church services. Local ministers were consulted before the teams agreed to the game.
  
  Maryville coach George Quarles told the newspaper that the game was "too big of an opportunity" to pass up, and "A lot of people that I trust, as far as my spiritual life goes, they gave me peace that church doesn't have to be Sunday at 10 o'clock. It can be other times. That's what I ultimately went with."
  
  According to the report, another factor could come into play: the weather. The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association does not allow games or practices when the heat index on the field reaches 105 degrees.
  
  The noontime start in August, coupled with the fact that Maryville will be unveiling its new synthetic-turf field, could present a problem. Game officials said they have discussed the issue with ESPN.
  
  Games between University (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Trotwood-Madison (Trotwood, Ohio) and Gilman (Baltimore) and Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati), which is ranked No. 19 in the MaxPreps Preseason Top 25 Early Contenders, also will be played that Sunday on ESPN and ESPNU, respectively.

  High school football recruiting continues to generate news

  Football recruiting news continues to come at full speed, and here are few prominent items from the past few days:

  Tre Bell, St. Peter's Prep (right)

  * St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) defensive back Tre Bell pledged his allegiance to Florida. According to the Hudson Reporter, Bell chose the Gators over Notre Dame, Rutgers, South Carolina and West Virginia, among others.
  
  The newspaper also reported that Vin Ascolese of North Bergen (N.J.) remains committed to Arkansas despite the recent scandal with coach Bobby Petrino. A handful of other recruits have said they now will look elsewhere.
  
  "I'm not decommitting, don't worry," Ascolese told the newspaper. "I signed with Arkansas, not only because of the coach, but because how great the fans are and the incredible atmosphere there. I'm committed to Arkansas."
  
  * Arizona State picked up its first commitment from the Class of 2013 when Nick Brown of Florence (Ariz.) said he will play for the Sun Devils. The Arizona Republic reported that ASU was Brown's only offer, despite having rushed for more than 1,800 yards and passing for 1,200 more last season, his first at quarterback. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Brown projects as a cornerback at the next level.
  
  * Florida State didn't waste any time trying to lock up Jacques Patrick, making an offer to the Timber Creek (Orlando, Fla.) running back. As a freshman last season, the 6-2, 200-pound Patrick rushed for more than 1,100 yards. The Orlando Sentinel reported Patrick also has visited Florida and Central Florida, and is taking a trip to Alabama this week.
  
  "I know other offers are just around the corner now," Patrick told the newspaper. "Once the first one comes, everyone is going to jump aboard the bandwagon now. That's what people tell me."
  
  * Top quarterback recruit Sefo Liufau of Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma, Wash.) will continue is college career at Colorado, according to The News Tribune. Liufau committed this past weekend after visiting the campus recently. Colorado was the first school to offer the 6-4, 220-pound junior, who figures to draw additional interest now.
  
  "I'll respectfully listen to what they have to say," Liufau told the newspaper about other schools, "but I'm a Buff."
  
  * Northwestern secured its first 2013 recruit, as dual-threat quarterback Matt Alviti of Maine South (Park Ridge, Ill.) committed to the program after watching the team's spring game this past weekend, according to the Chicago Tribune.
  
  * Staying in the Big Ten, Michigan State picked up a verbal commitment from Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) junior linebacker Shane Jones. Jones, a 6-1, 220-pounder who had 90 tackles last season, had nearly 20 scholarship offers, according to Cincinnati.com.
  
  The Spartans also picked up a commitment from Cathedral Prep (Erie, Pa.) quarterback Damion Terry.
  
  * According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, sophomore wide receiver Demarre Kitt from Sandy Creek (Tyrone, Ga.) has committed to Georgia. Kitt said he picked the Bulldogs in part because his best friend, defensive back Nick Glass of St. Pius X Catholic (Atlanta), also committed to Georgia.
  
  "Nick is committed to Georgia, and that helped a little with my decision," Kitt told the newspaper.

  Ohio's Moeller, Maryland's Gilman will play in 2012

  Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) will host Gilman (Baltimore) Aug. 26, according to Moeller head coach John Rodenberg.
  
  One of the top programs in the state of Ohio, Moeller finished 9-4 last season, losing to St. Xavier in the regional final. It should be extremely potent on offense, where it returns nine starters, including Spencer Iacovone.
  
  Gilman was 10-1 a year ago, losing only to Our Lady of Good Counsel.
  
  With Cyrus Jones moving on to Alabama, Gilman will be without the type of gamebreaker on offense that it has grown accustomed to. Still, with seven starters back on defense and six on offense, there should be little drop-off.
  
  Moeller will follow up its game against Gilman with contests against Grand Rapids Christian and Novi Catholic Central.
  
  Good Counsel and Don Bosco Prep await Gilman after its trip to the Buckeye State.

  Zach Banner set to make choice Monday

  National Signing Day is only two days away, but there has been plenty of action leading up to the official day.
  
  Here are some of the highlights:
  
  Zach Banner of Lakes (Lakewood, Wash.) is set to make his announcement at 2:30 pm PST. Banner, ranked No. 21 overall by MaxPreps, is a sizeable (6-foot-8, 295 pounds) offensive lineman who has drawn interest from the nation's premier programs. He has whittled his list to Oklahoma, USC and in-state Washington.
  
  "I know where I'm going to school," Banner told the The (Tacoma) News Tribune. "I can't wait for Monday."
  
  * Monty Madaris, ranked as the No. 22 wide receiver nationally by MaxPreps, has committed to Michigan State, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati,) standout was the newspaper's player of the year after a season in which he made 56 receptions for 1,137 yards and 16 TDs. Among his list of finalists were Michigan, Cincinnati and Kentucy.
  
  * New Ohio State coach Urban Meyer continues to make his mark for his first Buckeyes recruiting class. The latest commitment comes from Catholic Memorial School (West Roxbury, Mass.) cornerback Armani Reeves. Reeves originally was a Penn State commit, but reopened his recruitment. Reeves is ranked as the No. 11 cornerback recruit nationally by MaxPreps and he competed in the recent Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl.
  
  * Polo Manukainiu, a defensive end from Trinity (Euless, Texas) will sign with Texas A&M. A 6-5, 255-pounder, Manukainiu originally committed to Oklahoma and made official visits to UCLA, Utah and Baylor, according to the Dallas Morning News. He also considered Nebraska and Arkansas.
  
  * Division I programs aren't only for the nation's top 11-man players. Nate Meier, an 8-man standout from Fremont-Mills (Tabor, Iowa), has accepted on offer from Iowa. The 6-2, 235-pounder rushed for nearly 2,500 yards and 57 TDs last season. According to the Omaha World-Herald, Meier will be first male athlete from the school to receive a D-I scholarship since 1969.
  
  * Alabama continued to work on its 2013 class, getting a verbal commitment from Arkansas running back Altee Tenpenny of North Little Rock (Ark.). As reported by ARPreps.com, Tenpenny did not play this past season after he broke his ankle in a preseason scrimmage. He chose the national champions over offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Auburn and Tennessee.
  
  * Antonio Crawford,  the senior WR/DB for Florida Class 8A champion Tampa Plant, has decided to forego his commitment to Georgia Tech and attend the University of Miami. Crawford, who will go to Coral Gables as a defensive back, visited the campus last weekend and later told the Tampa Tribune, " "I really bonded with the players and coaches down there and had a good time. It felt right. I just needed to talk it over with my family and (Plant) Coach (Robert) Weiner before I made my final decision."

  Jim Lippincott leaves NFL for Moeller

  Football roots run deep at Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio), and Jim Lippincott knows that as well as anyone.
  
  Lippincott, currently the director of football operations for the Cincinnati Bengals, announced Tuesday that he is retiring from the NFL team to return to Moeller as defensive coordinator, a position he first held 30 years ago.
  
  Lippincott's first stint with the private, all-male prep school started in 1981. He served in several capacities, including athletic director, before leaving for the Bengals in 1992. He has worked in scouting and personnel for the NFL team during his 20-plus-year tenure, and will officially retire after the draft in April 2012, according to the team's web site. He will do double duty until that time.
  
  The 62-year-old Lippincott will reunite with friend and colleague Steve Klonne at Moeller. Klonne coaches the offensive line for the Crusaders, and was the head coach when Lippincott first joined the program in 1981; John Rodenberg is now the head coach. Moeller finished 9-4 this past season while advancing to the OHSAA Division I quarterfinals.
  
  "I wanted to coach high school again and I wanted to do it with Steve. It didn't matter where," Lippincott told Bengals.com reporter Geoff Hobson.
  
  "To me, high school is the most rewarding place to coach. And the fact that it is Moeller means a lot to me because I still feel like I have a close association with the school. It came down to I didn't want to get to be 70 or 75 and feel like I had missed the chance to do it."

  This week's offers to Ohio prep football players

  This week's offers extended to Ohio prep football players:
  
  * Sycamore junior tight end A.J. Williams was offered by Michigan State and Indiana last week. Williams, who is one of Ohio's top players in the 2012 class, also has offers from Michigan, Illinois, North Carolina State, Boston College, Toledo, Bowling Green and Ohio University.
  
  * Moeller junior wide receiver Monty Madaris added an offer from Nebraska – his eighth scholarship offer. Madaris, who is 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, also has offers from Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Boston College, Michigan State, Kent State and Bowling Green. Madaris, a first-team all-Greater Catholic League South division selection last season, had 50 receptions for 719 yards and seven touchdowns in 2010.
  
  * Wyoming junior offensive lineman Terry Davis has added an offer from Kent State. Davis, who is 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, also has offers from Bowling Green, Toledo and Ohio University.
  
  * Oak Hills junior offensive lineman Caleb Stacey earned his 11th scholarship offer when Cincinnati offered March 5. Stacey (6-4, 280) also has offers from North Carolina State, Illinois, Indiana, Toledo, Ohio University, Bowling Green, Boston College, Wake Forest, West Virginia and Miami University.
  
  * Elder junior offensive lineman T.C. Klusman has been offered by Louisville. It is the first offer for Klusman (6-4, 265 pounds).
  
  MaxPreps correspondent Jarrod Ulrey from the northern part of Ohio has these offers to report:
  
  * Division I offers are beginning to roll in for Upper Arlington (Columbus) junior wide receiver Frank Epitropoulos. According to ScoutingOhio.com, the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder was offered a scholarship to play for Ohio State earlier this week. He previously received offers from Duke, Purdue, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Toledo, Kent State and Miami.
  
  * Olentangy (Lewis Center) tackle Kenton Playko also recently added a pair of offers. The 6-5, 270-pounder was offered by West Virginia earlier this week as well as by Akron, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
  
  * According to ScoutingOhio.com, West Virginia recently offered Evan Jones of Ridgewood (West Lafayette), Anthony Stanko of Howland (Warren) and Tyler O'Connor of Lima Central Catholic.

  National Signing Day highlights the week in Ohio

  Although the region boasted the nation's top-rated quarterback in the 2011 class, National Signing Day came and went with little suspense in southern Ohio Wednesday.
  
  Huber Heights Wayne graduate Braxton Miller – who verbally committed to Ohio State in June 2010 – officially signed with the Buckeyes on Wednesday after he enrolled at the school in January. Miller threw for 2,167 yards and 17 touchdowns and rushed for 658 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior at Wayne.
  
  Miller was one of 12 Wayne seniors who signed on Wednesday. The Warriors were Division I state runners-up last December.
  
  Although there weren't any blockbuster changes on signing day, there were some interesting storylines.
  
  Moeller senior defensive lineman Jesse Hayes (Wisconsin) and Centerville defensive tackle Michael Bennett (Ohio State) had to deal with rolling blackouts in Austin, Texas during the morning. Both players were in Austin for the Team USA vs. The World game. Hayes was finally able to sign and fax his letter of intent to Wisconsin after an inconvenient delay. Bennett signed with Ohio State.
  
  Springfield linebacker Trey DePriest and Lakota West offensive lineman Ryan Kelly signed letters of intent with Alabama – the Crimson Tide gaining two signees from southwest Ohio in the same year is fairly uncommon. But, it shows the depth of talent in the region.
  
  Other highlights included St. Xavier linebackers Sean Duggan and Steven Daniels signing with Boston College and Cincinnati getting signings from players that included Badin quarterback Patrick Coyne, La Salle wide receiver Rodriguez Coleman, Sycamore offensive lineman Justin Murray and Withrow defensive tackle Brandon Mitchell.
  
  SEYFRIED CHANGES COMMITMENT
  Wyoming senior quarterback Kyle Seyfried committed to Miami University as a preferred walk-on, according to the Enquirer. Seyfried, who is 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, had previously committed to the University of Dayton. Seyfried was one of the state's top quarterbacks in the 2011 class.
  
  ANTHONE TAYLOR SIGNS WITH BUFFALO
  Huber Heights Wayne senior running back Anthone Taylor signed with Buffalo last week, according to Wayne coach Jay Minton. Taylor was the third leading rusher in the Greater Western Ohio Conference during the regular season. He rushed for 1,533 yards and 13 touchdowns overall for the Warriors. Wayne was the Division I state runner-up in 2010.
  
  MORE RECRUITING NEWS
  Oak Hills junior offensive lineman Caleb Stacey was offered by Illinois on Wednesday. Stacey, who is 6-4 and 280 pounds, also has offers from Toledo, Bowling Green and Ohio. …Centerville junior defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo (6-4, 215) has added offers from Northwestern and West Virginia, according to ScoutingOhio.com. He also has offers from Cincinnati, Stanford, Syracuse and Toledo.
  
  RANDOM THOUGHTS
  Colerain senior cornerback Chris Dukes wore a very stylish bow tie at the National Signing Day ceremony Wednesday at Colerain High School. The bow tie matched the gold and blue colors of the University of Toledo, where he signed.

  Six sign on to the Big 10

  AUSTIN, Texas – A brigade of six future Big Ten athletes, including a pair of Ohio State standouts, just signed their letters of intent at the Team USA vs. The World Signing Day Breakfast.

  The future Buckeyes were defensive back Ron Tanner (6-1, 190) and offensive lineman Michael Bennett (6-3, 275).
  
  Others to sign were highly-touted running back Aaron Green (Nebraska), defensive end Jesse Hayes (Wisconsin), tight end Jack Konopka (Northwestern) and Kellen Jones (Michigan).
  
  Green is the highest rated among the six at No. 33 overall and Bennett is No. 65.
  
  Green said the recruiting process was stressful but picked Nebraska on strictly a gut feeling. "It's just the way I felt there," he said. "Everything felt right."
