  • If not for a strong wind, Cameron Burrell would have blown away all the 100-meter dash records before a crowd of 16,549 on Saturday during the 86th edition of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Tex.

The Ridge Point (Missouri City, Texas) sprint star won the 100 in a blazing 10.07 seconds, but was aided by a 3.2 wind (1.2 over what is allowable for records). The relays record is 10.18 and the Myers Stadium record is 10.29, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Cameron is the son of Leroy Burrell, who won sprint gold and silver medals during the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

Tony Brown, a junior from Ozen (Beaumont, Texas), also left his mark on the relays by winning the Division II 110-meter hurdles in an outstanding 13.38 seconds - both a meet and stadium record.  Brown also is a five-star defensive back in football.

Daven Murphree of Big Sandy (Texas) soared 17-8 1/2 to win the pole vault, while Natron Gibson of Bowie (Arlington, Texas) leaped 6-10 1/4 to capture the high jump. Silver Creek (Longmont, Colo.) senior Valarie Allman fired the discus 184-2 for an impressive victory.

Ozen (Beaumont, Texas) senior Nekia Jones notched her second straight shot put victory with a throw of 47-7 1/4. The 5-11, 262-pounder is headed to the University of Texas to play basketball.

The prestigious meet, which also included collegians, drew 6,407 athletes.
  • A question regarding a transfer student's eligibility could threaten the playoff future for 11-1 Bowie (Arlington, Texas).

    Bowie's playoff run in jeopardy.

The University Interscholastic League will rule Monday if Bowie stays or will be replaced by Franklin (El Paso) in the Class 5A Division I Region I semifinal against DeSoto.

Bowie defeated Franklin 31-14 Friday in Midland.

Franklin has received word from the UIL that it should continue as if it won the game.

At issue is a "Parent Residence Waiver'' required for a student not in compliance with residency rules because he or she is living with a parent who is separated.

According to the Dallas Morning News' Corbett Smith, Arlington ISD athletic director O.J. Kemp was contacted by the league on Tuesday regarding the matter.

If the UIL allows Bowie to have a waiver approved retroactively, no action would need to be taken.

The unidentified student in question, a midseason transfer, played sparingly for Bowie as a reserve.

Bowie shocked the state and the nation with a 38-36 victory over nationally-ranked Skyline.

In an upset of Texas-sized proportions, Bowie (Arlington, Texas) stunned Skyline, ranked No. 4 in the Xcellent 25, 38-36.

After leading most of the game, Bowie had to withstand a furious fourth quarter comeback attempt by the heavily-favored Skyline.

Bowie got on the board first to take a 6-0 and looked good for much of the first half.

It led 24-16 at the half and came out firing in the third quarter, as quarterback Tony James hit senior receiver B.J. Ebozue for a touchdown to grow the lead to 31-16.

Bowie scored again before the period ended and led 38-16 at the start of the fourth quarter.

That's when Skyline began to launch its comeback. Quarterback Devante Kincade connected with Lamont Johnson on a 60-yard score and minutes later, sophomore Malik Jemmison returned a block punt for a touchdown to quickly make the score 38-30 with only a few minutes remaining.

With a chance to ice the game for Bowie, James threw an interception to give Skyline one last chance.

That was all Skyline needed, as Kincade converted on a 4th-and-1 and broke loose for a touchdown to bring the score to 38-36.

The two-point conversion attempt to tie the game failed, forcing Skyline to attempt an onside kick. However, Edwin Freeman recovered the ball for Bowie to seal the victory and hand the nation's No. 4 team its first loss of the season.
