  • Young players are often told to never give up on a play, and DeShawn Smith just showed why.

The Nature Coast Tech (Brooksville, Fla.) sophomore running back appeared to be down after being tackled in last week's game against Pasco (Dade City, Fla.), but amazingly contorted his body, kept his balance without letting his knees hit the ground and spun away from the defense for a 50-yard touchdown run.

The 5-foot-7, 170-pound Smith rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries in the 29-28 win over Pasco. It was his highest rushing total on the season.

We know it's still early, but this has to be a top contender for play of the year.
  • The college choices for some of the Tampa Bay area's top prep football players have been known for months.

But there were still plenty of storylines Tuesday as commits firmed choices while some swapped schools.

There was plenty of signing at Jefferson (Tampa) as eight players signed letters of intent. Quantity also was the order of the day at Robinson (Tampa) as six players signed. Also, five Jesuit (Tampa) players signed college football scholarships while four players each at Countryside (Clearwater) and Armwood (Seffner) inked deals.

The top schools in the state got their well-known players in Plant RB James Wilder, Plant City OL Jordan Prestwood (both signed with FSU) and Florida (ATH Ja'juan Story) and Miami (DE Anthony Chickillo).

And Class 3A state champion Jefferson's eight college-bound players included record-setting quarterback Quentin Williams. He signed with I-AA Bethune-Cookman. Other Jefferson players to sign include WR Andre Davis (South Florida), WR Chris Moore (Cincinnati), LB Ramik Wilson (Georgia), OL Delryn Wilson (Western Kentucky), OL Manny Cromuel (South Dakota) and DB Rodney Mills (Charleston Southern).

Among the top signings at Robinson was KR Frankie Williams (Purdue) and Ruben Gonzalez (South Florida). Meanwhile, top players inking deals at the schools with multiple signees included Jesuit LB Anthony Harrell (opting out from Wake Forest to sign with Georgia Tech), Countryside OT Tyler Moore (Nebraska) and Armwood QB Josh Grady signing with Vanderbilt.

Surprise moves included Pasco (Dade City) safety Jamie Byrd spurning Boise State for TCU and Largo DL Adarious Raynor switching from Colorado State to Indiana.

All total, more than 20 Bay area players signed Division I scholarships.

Among the other more prominent ones were Armwood LB Harvellio Buie (New Mexico), Countryside DB Alex Dixon (North Carolina), Freedom (Tampa) LB Keith Lewis (Ole Miss), Gaither (Tampa) DL Chadd Hannah (Cincinnati), Plant OL Tony Posada (Michigan), Plant QB Phillip Ely (Alabama), Sickles RB Carey White (Florida Atlantic), Tampa Catholic FB Hunter Joyer (Florida) and Tarpon Springs OL Zach Debell (Georgia).
