Pre-race favorite Samantha Nadel, a senior from
North Shore (Glen Head, N.Y.), won the girls mile in an outstanding time of 4:47.66 on Saturday during the U.S. Open in New York City. It was the fastest time ever for a high school girl on the Madison Square Garden track.
Nadel won by seven seconds over teammate Brianna Nerud.
In the boys mile, Zavon Watkins of
Liverpool (N.Y.) placed first in 4:19.86. Wesley Gallagher of
Pembroke ( Mass.) was right on his heels with a time of 4:20.01.
The elite 800-meter run was captured by Fantu Magiso of Ethiopia in 2:07.54
Neptune (N.J.) star Ajee Wilson finished second in 2:09.09.
