  Nation's No. 42 recruit Kendall Fuller picks Virginia Tech

  

  Kendall Fuller

  Kendall Fuller announced today that he is going to follow in the footsteps of three older brothers and play football next year for Virginia Tech University, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
  
  The incoming senior at Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) is ranked as the No. 3 cornerback and No. 42 overall player in the class of 2013 by CBS/MaxPreps recruiting analyst Tom Lemming. He said that Clemson University was his second choice from among over 20 Division I scholarship offers.
  
  The 6-foot, 175-pounder made three interceptions and 25 1/2 tackles as a junior. In addition, he had 26 catches for 527 yards and five touchdowns.
  
  Fuller's oldest brother, Vincent, played at Tech before spending seven years in the NFL. Brothers Kyle and Corey currently are members of the Tech squad.

  Washington 3A/4A Hardwood Classic notes

  A couple of notes from Washington's combined 3A and 4A state championships at the Tacoma Dome;
  
  * Washington signee Tony Wroten Jr. of Garfield (Seattle) produced a monster statline in a 90-80 Bulldog win over Puyallup with 29 points, 10 rebounds, 6 blocked shots, 5 assists and 2 steals. Wroten also put a huge exclamation mark on the quarterfinal win by alley-ooping to himself for a dunk as time expired.
  
  Garfield will face Gonzaga Prep (Spokane) in Friday's 4A semifinals.
  
  * Gonzaga head coach Mark Few was in the Dome Thursday to watch a couple of future Bulldogs go at it. Invited walk-on Chris Sarbaugh and Gonzaga Prep knocked off highly-touted signee Gary Bell and Kentridge (Kent), 72-60. Like another Gonzaga Prep product that walked on for the Zags, David Stockton, Sarbaugh has the look of a player that could eventually contribute for the West Coast Conference program. He matched Bell's 22-point performance and added eight rebounds and three assists.
  
  Gonzaga Prep will meet Washington State signee DaVonte Lacy and Curtis (University Place) in the other 4A semifinal.
  
  * Washington is a geographically divided state with the Cascade Mountains limiting exposure for players on the east side of the state in the west, and vice versa. So every year the tournament seems to produce a breakout performer that didn't have the entire state's attention going in.
  
  Junior David Trimble of A.C. Davis (Yakima) emerged as that player in the day's opening game at 9 a.m. Trimble, a versatile 6-foot-2 guard, piled up 24 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in an 88-76 win over Oregon signee Brett Kingma and Jackson (Mill Creek).
  
  Trimble is a two-time league MVP and also a standout football player for the Pirates.

  Washington 3A/4A Hardwood Classic

  I'll be courtside Thursday at Washington's 3A/4A Hardwood Classic at the Tacoma Dome.
  
  The WIAA is experimenting with a new format this year, doing away with separate 16-team, double-elimination tournaments for each classification and combining the big-school championships in what should be a crowd-pleasing format.
  
  Here is a look at the quarterfinal pairings in each classification along with start times. The rankings are taken from MaxPreps.com's statewide Freeman Rankings.

  11:16 a.m. – The Northwest Panthers of Tacoma, Wash., are taking on Minnesota Pump N Run at Rancho High School's main gym in North Las Vegas.

  Panther big man Landen Lucas – who recently announced he was transferring from Sunset (Portland, Ore.) to Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) – seems to be the reason several big-time college coaches are in the building, including Arizona' Sean Miller, California's Mike Montgomery and Oklahoma's Jeff Capel.

  Lucas, a 6-foot-10 post player, is having a rough time putting the ball in the basket in this one but there are a lot of other things to like about him. Sure hands, solid passer (especially from the high post) and while it sounds incredibly simple, he always finds somebody to put a body on when the ball goes up.

  Teammate Davonte Lacy, a recent Washington State commitment, is having a nice second half and has led a surge for the Puget Sound-area team that has them up by nine at the moment. He was fouled on a 3-point attempt and knocked down all three attempts, then added an and-one moments later.

  The Panthers also feature Donald Gaddy, the brother of University of Washington sophomore point guard Abdul Gaddy. Donald is a solid, but undersized, combo guard.

  11:36 a.m. - Minnesota Pump N Run, behind a good-looking 6-foot-9 forward Shelby Moats, Estan Tyler and Roosevelt Scott, closed this game with a flurry to win 64-57. We will have more on Moats later, he might be the smartest kid in Las Vegas this week.

  Next up is a loaded MBA Elite team from Mississippi facing the Michigan Mustangs. We will see what LaQuinton Ross has to offer.
