  • Justin Jacome was the pitching and hitting hero as Redlands East Valley (Redlands, Calif.) outlasted Yucaipa (Calif.) 5-4 in a 14-inning baseball marathon.

    The 6-foot-6 senior left-hander pitched 9 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly after slamming a leadoff triple in the bottom of the 14th. Yanni Thanopoulos supplied the winning RBI with a flyball to right field.

    Brian Chaparro helped the winners overcome an early 4-1 deficit. He hit a key two-run single in the fifth, then tied the game at 4-4 with a two-out, two-strike RBI hit in the seventh.

    * Ryan Olson, a junior right-hander, struck out 20 batters as Western Christian (Upland, Calif.) blanked Calvary Murrieta (Murrieta, Calif.) 6-0. He is committed to the University of San Diego.

    * Geneva (Ill.) continued to be a thorn in the side of North (St. Charles, Ill.) by pouring across 15 runs in the fifth inning of a 17-1 victory. North has lost just twice in its last 18 games, both times to Geneva.

    * Edgewater (Orlando, Fla.) junior J.B. Woodman has pledged to the University of Mississippi for baseball, according to the Orlando Sentinel. He is batting .450 with three homers and he has driven in 27 runs. He also is a standout football player, having passed for 1,544 yards and 17 touchdowns last fall. The 6-2, 190-pound standout also considered Florida and Air Force.

    * Pembroke Pines Charter (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) nipped Niceville (Fla.) 1-0 to win its first Class 6A state softball championship after finishing second three times. Cristina Sacramento struck out 18 and had a no-hitter before it was broken up with two outs in the seventh inning. Victoria Gonzalez supplied the game's only run with a fourth-inning homer.

    * Senior Molly Jarrett pitched a perfect game with 17 strikeouts as Northport (N.Y.) blanked Central Islip (N.Y.) 10-0.
