Freddy Johnson of Greensboro Day (N.C.)
continues to add to his victory total as the winningest boys basketball coach in North Carolina history.
Johnson now has 822 victories during his 35 seasons at Greensboro Day. Five times he has guided his team to state championships in the Independent Schools Athletic Association. His teams have lost 259 times.
"The key is to have great assistant coaches and great players," he told Tim Stevens of the Raleigh News & Observer. "The other thing is to stay at one school and build a program. One thing that our teams have been able to do consistently well is to play as a team. We've been able to put kids on the floor who wanted to play well together."
Johnson has turned out such standout players as Jason Capel (North Carolina), Justin Gainey (North Carolina State) and Thomas Roberts (William & Mary).
The previous state record holder was Harvey Reid, who compiled an 818-206 record during an outstanding career at two schools.
