Quick update from a morning trip to Bishop Gorman and the Fab 48. Kevin Johnson of California Supreme Elite and Taft (Woodland Hills, Calif.) had a nice outing in a win over Brandon Bass Elite.
When Johnson gets his momentum going to the basket, he's tough top stop. The 6-9, 250-pound plus rising senior had a couple of dominant stretches, converting chances around the hoop and limiting second-chance opportunities for the opposition by pulling down rebounds in a crowd.
Brandon Bass Elite was a perimeter-oriented team with virtually nobody built to defend Johnson in any capacity, so it will be interesting to see how the big man fares as the tournament progresses. Conditioning will need some work.
According to Johnson, Illinois is his only offer, but Oregon and San Diego State are following his progress this week.
After a 20-minute trip across the valley, I'm back courtside at the adidas Super 64 where a stacked Indiana Elite roster will face VA (Virginia Assault). The game features a pair of true 7-footers with Indiana Elite's Chier Ajou and VA Assault's Isaac Freeman.
