There are a bounty of top athletes around the South, let alone the state of Alabama, for the Crimson Tide to target on the football recruiting trail.
That's what makes Alabama'a latest offer somewhat of a surprise.
Nick Saban and staff made an offer Sunday night to fast-rising New Jersey athlete Anthony Averett
, according to Averett's coach, Zac Valentine.
The Woodbury (N.J.)
junior, who was responsible for 21 touchdowns on offense and 68 tackles on defense, plays at a small school in the southern part of the Garden State. In addition to an offer from in-state Rutgers, Averett also has offers from West Virginia, Temple, East Carolina, Syracuse, and UMass.
