  • South Dearborn (Aurora, Ind.) boys basketball coach Rick Shumate has been coaching for 18 years, and he said he has never seen anything like it. Neither have we.

In fact, the circumstances surrounding one of the great fourth-quarter comebacks ever are so amazing, we had to read the account multiple times just to make sure.

As reported by the Indianapolis Star, South Dearborn trailed by 29 points early in the fourth quarter of its Jan. 20 game against East Central (St. Leon, Ind.). Game over, right? No one would have thought different, especially considering that East Central beat the Knights by 33 points earlier in the season.

South Dearborn, though, scored the game's final 30 points to post an unbelievable 55-54 victory over the visiting Trojans. It was only the second win of the season for South Dearborn.

"It had to be a perfect storm," Shumate told the newspaper. "Everything had to go right for us."

And did it ever. South Dearborn forced turnovers with a full-court press, and East Central failed to convert on its free throws down the stretch.

The Knights finally took the lead on a three-point play by Weston Taylor with 11.4 seconds remaining. His converted free throw provided the final margin after East Central missed on the game's final shot, according to the Star's report.

"I've seen some rallies in 18 years of coaching, but nothing like that," Shumate, in his first year with South Dearborn, told the Star. "The amazing thing is that we were able to sustain it for that long and follow through on it."

The Knights will need to carry some of that momentum into its next game Friday against Greensburg (Ind.). The Pirates are ranked second in the state in Class 3A and have yet to lose on the season.
