  Tavon Austin won’t be the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL draft next week. He likely won't be among the Top 10. All four CBS Sports experts, in fact, picked the speedy and elusive 5-foot-8, 174-pound receiver and kick returner from West Virginia to go to the St. Louis Rams at pick No. 16.

  According to Dunbar (Baltimore) coach Lawrence Smith, none of that matters. His story — at least for inner-city kids — is definitely No. 1.
  
  “There’s going to be tears of joy when Tavon gets drafted,” Smith said. “Here’s a kid who did what he had to do to make it. He made it in the classroom. He never got in trouble. It’s a great story for kids in the inner city to see one of their own do the right thing.”
  
  Austin overcame his size and plenty of skeptics to lead Dunbar to three straight state championships and finished things off poetically with the game-winning 2-point conversion in a 20-19 win over Fort Hill (Cumberland) his senior season.
  
  “Everyone one the planet knew the ball was going to him, but he still scored,” Smith said.
  
  A four-year letterman, Austin finished with 123 career touchdowns, the most in Maryland history. He also finished with the most rushing yards as well.
  
  “He’s the best high school football player I ever saw,” Smith said. “If he’s not the greatest in Maryland all-time, he’s one of the top two.”
  
  And none of it went to his head, Smith said.
  
  “The greatest thing about Tavon was how humble he was,” Smith said. “He always gave his offensive line all the praise.”

  Veglahn strikes out five batters in single inning

  Eric Veglahn set a Minnesota state record when he struck out five batters in one inning as La Crescent (Minn.) defeated Hayfield (Minn.) 4-1.
  
  Though no records are kept in this category by the National Federation, it could be a national - perhaps even a world - record.
  
  His coach, Rick Boyer, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune, "I have never seen five strikeouts in an inning, at any level, anywhere."
  
  Entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the senior left-hander struck out the first two batters. He also fanned the third batter, which should have ended the game, but the breaking pitch got away from the catcher, allowing the batter to reach first base. He struck out the fourth batter, but again he reached on a passed ball. Then he gunned down the fifth batter - who was the potential tying run. There was no passed ball this time, the game was over and his name was permanently etched in the record books.
  
  He finished with 13 strikeouts and leads the state with 101, according to the Star Tribune.
  
  *In another Minnesota highlight game, Osseo (Minn.) outlasted Coon Rapids (Minn.) 6-5 in 19 innings over a two-day period. It was one inning short of the state record, but four state records were either set or tied. The records were for most at-bats for one team (68 for Osseo), most at-bats for a player (six had nine), most sacrifice bunts (five for Coon Rapids) and a record was tied when an Osseo player fanned five times. Only one error was made in the extremely well played contest.
  
  *Coach Norm Walsh won his 500th baseball game when Boston College High (Boston, Mass.) defeated Malden Catholic (Malden, Mass.) 6-3.

  MaxPreps National Signing Day 2012 Region Wrap: Maryland

  Stefon Diggs chose to wait with his commitment.

  
  While some recruits across the country changed their minds on National Signing Day, most in Maryland stayed put with their commitments.
  
  The only major announcement of the day was Potomac (Oxon Hill, Md.) athlete Ron Darby, who signed with Florida State. Darby was previously committed to Notre Dame but backed out earlier in January.
  
  With National Signing Day all but over for Maryland's top prospects in the Class of 2012, the attention now turns to Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who will announce his destination on Feb. 10. Diggs is expected to choose between Ohio State, Maryland, Auburn, California and Maryland.
  
  Diggs is set to take a visit to Maryland this weekend, where running back Wes Brown and offensive lineman Mike Madaras — Diggs' teammates at Good Counsel — signed on Wednesday.
  
  Once the Diggs decision is in, all eyes will immediately turn to the Class of 2013, which boasts a trio of top prospects to watch, according to recruiting analyst Tom Lemming. Hylton (Woodbridge, Va.) linebacker E.J. Levenberry, Dunbar (Washington, D.C.) quarterback Lamel Matthews and Good Counsel running back Dorian O'Daniel all check in on Lemming's Class of 2013 watch list.
  
  Levenberry is highly sought after, boasting offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Maryland, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC and many others. Levenberry transferred to Hylton after spending his previous seasons with DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.).
  
  Matthews is drawing interest from Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Penn State and Virginia Tech. Major suitors for O'Daniel include California, Florida, Iowa, Maryland and Wisconsin.
  
  A Class of 2014 prospect making some noise is Dunbar (Baltimore) quarterback William Crest. Crest holds six early offers from West Virginia, Virginia, Virginia Tech, UTEP, Ohio State and Maryland. His high school teammate, receiver Deontay McManus, signed a letter of intent to West Virginia on Wednesday.

  MaxPreps National Signing Day 2012 Region Update: Maryland

  BALTIMORE — For Dunbar (Baltimore) wide receiver Deontay McManus, the decision was a no-brainer: He was sticking with West Virginia no matter what.
  
  McManus received a late visit from Ohio State coach Urban Meyer a couple days ago, but to no avail for the Buckeyes. McManus committed to West Virginia last summer and honored the commitment Wednesday with his letter of intent.
  
  "I fell in love with West Virginia," McManus said. "I always knew I wanted to go there, since day one when I toured the campus. I fell in love with the coaches. I really had my mind made up. I tried to throw some schools out there to throw people off, but since day one I knew where I was going 100 percent."
  
  McManus is 6-foot-2, 215 pounds and arguably one of West Virginia's top commits in the 2012 class. He said he'll compete for an open starting slot receiver position this fall.
  
  Besides developing a great relationship with West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen, McManus will reunite with former Dunbar teammate Tavon Austin, the Mountaineers' top receiver. McManus chose the Mountaineers over 50 other schools that offered him.
  
  McManus was the headliner of six players from Dunbar to sign letters of intent Wednesday. Cornerback Terrence Williams and linebacker Ernest Hawkins signed letters of intent to UTEP. Running back Lavar Highsmith and offensive lineman Joshua Davis signed on to play at Morgan State. Fullback Charles Brown signed a Letter of Intent to Division II school Shepherd University.
  
  In other areas, Virginia received its letter of intent from DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) defensive end Michael Moore. Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) teammates Wes Brown and Mike Madaras sent their letters to Maryland.
  
  Gilman (Baltimore) athlete Cyrus Jones faxed his Letter of Intent into Alabama, and then tweeted, "It's official! #BamaBoy."
  
  Potomac (Oxon Hill, Md.) athlete Ron Darby is still slated to announce his decision at 2:30 p.m. EST. Darby's choosing between Florida State, Notre Dame, Auburn and Clemson.

  Though Wednesday is dubbed National Signing Day, it only ushers in the signing period. Stefon Diggs will have until April 1 to ink his signature to the school of his choosing, and will head to Maryland this weekend, MaxPreps reports.
  
  Diggs is ranked the 14th overall prospect by MaxPreps and is considered the second-best receiver in this year's class, behind Dorial Green-Beckham of Hillcrest (Springfield, Mo.).
  
  Though Diggs is expected to delay his signing, another talented Maryland product plans to announce where he's headed on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., EST. Potomac (Oxon Hill, Md.) athlete Ron Darby will decide between Florida State, Notre Dame, Auburn and Clemson. Darby, the 27th overall prospect nationally, was previously a Notre Dame commit, but reopened his recruitment earlier this month.

  The rest of Maryland's elite are expected to sign with the schools they've already made verbal commitments to. DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) defensive end Michael Moore (No. 64 overall) is expected to attend Virginia, Gilman (Baltimore) receiver/cornerback Cyrus Jones (No. 76 overall) pledged to Alabama and running back Wes Brown (No. 151 overall), Diggs' teammate at Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.), committed to Maryland at the Under Armour All-American game.
  
  Maryland high school division 1A champion Dunbar (Baltimore) features six players signing to schools, headlined by receiver Deontay McManus, who committed to West Virginia last summer. McManus is considered one of West Virginia's top recruits of the 2012 class.
