Team USA 18U opened the IBAF Junior AAA/18U World Championships over the weekend with a 17-0 win over Netherlands and added an 11-1 victory over Colombia, but lost to host Korea 8-2.
Against Netherlands,
Christian Arroyo was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI while
Jeremy Martinez was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Dom Nunez also had two hits with two RBI while
Ryan Boldt was 2-for-4 with with an RBI.
William Abreu and
Reese McGuire each added two RBI apiece with Abreu belting a double and McGuire socking a double.
Chris Okey also had a double.
Garrett Williams started on the mound and went six innings, giving up five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Team USA was unable to get much going against Korea, scoring one run in the first inning and another in the fourth on seven hits. Martinez was 2-for-2 with an RBI while Arroyo also drove in a run.
Keegan Thompson took the loss for Team USA, giving up three runs in three innings pitched with three strikeouts.
Stephen Gonsalves got Team USA back on pace with a complete-game outing against Colombia. Gonsalves gave up one run on six hits while walking two and striking out eight.
On offense, Boldt put on a running display as he stole five bases and scored four runs while walking in all four of his at-bats.
Martinez continued his hot bat, going 1-for-2 with a triple and three RBI. Abreu added two doubles while Nunez and McGuire each had a double and
Conner Heady had a triple. McGuire tied Martinez with three RBI.
Team USA continues play Monday against Venezuela and will conclude pool play against Australia on Tuesday. Medal games are scheduled for Saturday.
