Three of the nation's longest football winning streaks were broken during the weekend as state playoffs became more challenging.

The longest streak to fall was 39 in a row by Boylan (Rockford, Ill.), which bowed to twice-beaten Lake Zurich (Ill.) 21-6 during the Class 7A state quarterfinals. The winners stifled Boylan on defense and had a pair of runners who rushed for over 100 yards - Connor Schrader with 126 and Sean Lynch with 118.

*West De Pere (De Pere, Wis.) had mowed down 39 consecutive opponents before being nipped by Waupaca (Wis.) 16-14 in the Division 3 state semifinals. Senior Beau Ash kicked the winning 22-yard field goal with 1:09 left - his first attempt during his four-year career - to send the unbeaten Comets into the state-title game. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Ash also carried 11 times for 155 yards, including a 92-yard touchdown gallop in the first quarter.

*Cheverus (Portland, Maine) had stretched its winning streak to 34 before Thornton Academy (Saco, Maine) reversed an earlier 28-14 loss with a 20-13 triumph in the Class A state semifinals. Junior Andrew Libby did the bulk of the damage by running 28 times for 130 yards and scoring three touchdowns, in addition to delivering some big hits on defense.

*On the more predictable side, Hornell (N.Y.) raced to its 50th consecutive victory with a 27-6 decision against Cleveland Hill (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) during the Class C state quarterfinals. Julian Reinhart, a 5-11, 175-pound senior, made three interceptions and scored three touchdowns in the second half.

*Waunakee (Wis.) tied the state record by nipping Dominican (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) 35-28 in overtime during the Division 2 state semifinals for its 48th consecutive victory. The Warriors won on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Will Decorah to Ryan Kruser, but still needed an interception by Jack Dedrick to end the game.

*In a battle of unbeatens, Webb City (Mo.) made it 43 in a row with a 35-6 victory over Sullivan (Mo.) in the Class 4 state quarterfinals. Nate Brown set the table by blocking a field goal attempt - which was returned by Phoenix Johnson for a 77-yard touchdown - and blocking a punt, which also led to a touchdown.

*The win streak reached 42 for Regina (Iowa City, Iowa) following a 42-21 victory over Dike-New Hartford (Dike, Iowa) in the Class A state semifinals. Mark Ward completed 12 of 14 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns and scored twice on short runs.

*Maryville (Tenn.) had a strong finish to beat Oak Ridge (Tenn.) 39-25 in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs and extend its winning streak to 41 games. Shawn Prevo rushed for 180 yards and two important fourth-quarter touchdowns, while Nick Myers completed 12 of 18 passes, two for touchdowns.

*The Ithaca (IMich.) Yellowjackets posted their seventh shutout of the year and boosted their winning streak to an even 40 games with a 31-0 victory over Hill-McCloy (Montrose, Mich.) during the Division 6 state quarterfinals. Travis Smith completed 12 of 19 passes for 236 yards and ran 10 times for another 52 yards. Jordan Hessbrook led the defense with a pair of interceptions.

*Also moving up the ladder are Bellevue (Wash.), which reached 37 straight with a 28-0 shutout of Ferndale (Wash.) in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs; Duxbury (Mass.), which raised its streak to 36 with a 35-0 blanking of Whitman-Hanson Regional (Whitman, Mass.); and Greenwood (Ark.), which won its 35th game in a row with a 56-14 victory over Fair (Little Rock, Ark.).

Clairton (Pa.) had little trouble keeping alive its 56-game win streak, the longest active streak in the nation, despite playing the No. 7-ranked Class A team in the state in Imani Christian Academy (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Armani Ford completed 5 of 6 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns while Tyler Boyd ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns on just nine carries to lead Clairton, which finished the regular season with a 9-0 record.

Clairton will find out its opponent for the WPIAL playoffs on Monday. Clairton has won three straight state Class A championships.

Clairton's 56-game win streak was just one of several win streaks that stayed in tact with little competition from the opposition. Of the 10 11-man teams with win streaks of 35 games or better, only Boylan (Rockford, Ill.) won by less than four touchdowns and it dispatch with Jacobs (Algonquin, Ill.) 28-10 in the first round of the Illinois Class 7A playoffs.

Here's how the other teams with long win streaks fared over the weekend.

*Hornell (N.Y.) - defeated Attica 35-0 win the Class C semifinals to extend its win streak to 48 straight games.

*Waunakee (Wis.) - defeated DeForest (Wisc.) 34-7 to keep alive its win streak at 46 in a row.

*Webb City (Mo.) - downed West Plains (Mo.) 45-7 on Thursday to run its win streak to 40 straight.

*Maryville (Tenn.) - topped Lenoir City (Tenn.) 42-7 to claim its 39th in a row.

*West De Pere (De Pere, Wis.) - knocked off Two Rivers (Wisc.) 42-6 to raise its win total to 38 in a row.

*Regina (Iowa City, Iowa) - won its 38th straight game with a 42-7 win over Tipton (Iowa) on Wednesday.

*Ithaca (Mich.) - routed Calvin Christian (Grandville, Mich.) 42-14 for its 38th straight.

*Boylan (Rockford, Ill.) - advanced to the next round of the Illinois 7A playoffs with its win over Jacobs, its 38th in a row.

*Bellevue (Wash.) - blanked Mercer Island (Wash.) 42-0 for its 35th straight victory.

Ithaca (Mich.) used its air-tight defense to blank Shepherd (Mich.) 48-0 on Friday night. It was the sixth shutout of the year for the Yellowjackets, who have won their last 37 games.

Ithaca, which allowed a mere 37 net yards and one first down to Shepherd, has yielded just 41 points in nine games this year.

Junior quarterback Travis Smith set the offensive pace by completing 14 of 19 passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran 11 times for 55 yards and two other touchdowns.

*Hornell (N.Y.) raised its winning streak to 47 games with a 41-13 victory over Wayland-Cohocton (Wayland, N.Y.) during the Section V, Class C quarterfinals as it seeks a fourth consecutive state championship.

*Unexpectedly trailing 7-0 at halftime, Waunakee (Wis.) roared to a 28-7 victory over Wilmot (Wis.) in the first round of the Division 2 state playoffs. It marked the 45th consecutive win for the three-time defending state champions.

*Webb City (Mo.) boosted its winning streaks to 39 overall and 90 in the regular season with a 42-0 victory over Branson (Mo.).

*Maryville (Tenn.) recorded its 38th straight victory by scoring on its first five possessions en route to a 42-7 win against William Blount (Maryville, Tenn.).

*In addition to Ithaca, three other teams stretched their winning streaks to 37 games on Friday night. Boylan (Rockford, Ill.) routed Auburn (Rockford, Ill.) 60-6; Regina (Iowa City, Iowa) rolled past Sigourney-Keota (Sigourney, Iowa) 49-7; and West De Pere (De Pere, Wis.) posted a 48-0 triumph over Antigo (Wis.) during the Division 3 playoff opener.

Senior running back Zach Rothering paced West De Pere with 197 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. Brad Ambrosius took care of the defense by making 13 tackles (two sacks) and forcing a fumble. A running clock was used during the second half.

*Bellevue (Wash.) routed Liberty (Renton, Wash.) 49-11 for its 34th straight victory.

Bellevue was one team that saw its long win streak extended Friday.

The most anticipated football game of the year in southwest Missouri — matching two 7-0 powers — took place Friday before a packed house on Senior Night in Webb City (Mo.). While the result may not have been a surprise to some, the score certainly was.

The host Cardinals flew past Ozark (Mo.) by a score of 28-7. Ozark had been averaging 51 points, 507 yards and had not trailed in any previous game this season.

Webb City has now won 89 straight regular-season games and 38 in a row overall.

Webb City coach John Roderique told the Springfield News-Leader, "Defensively, we were very physical. We flew to the football. And, offensively we were able to keep the chains moving, and that's one thing we really wanted to do."

Ozark coach Mark Bliss said, "We threw the kitchen sink at them. And our hat's off to them. It was a great game for us, because we needed to be tested to see where we were.  And it was a humbling experience. We'll go back and look at the film and try to get better."

Phoenix Johnson paced the Cardinals with 102 yards on 16 carries.

Here's a look at some more of the country's longest winning streaks.

    Hornell (N.Y.)

*Hornell (N.Y.) raised its winning streak to 46 games with a 48-28 victory over Haverling (Bath, N.Y.).

*Waunakee's (Wis.) streak reached 44 with a narrow 13-10 win against Mount Horeb-Barneveld (Mount Horeb, Wis.). Tyler Reynolds ran 32 times for 170 yards and scored the winning touchdown on a 13-yard run with just over three minutes left.

Though on the losing end, coach Travis Rohrer told the Wisconsin State Journal, "It was a heavyweight bout. You had two heavyweights just slugging it out play for play. I'm so proud of our kids. They made one more play than we did."

*Maryville (Tenn.) outscored Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.) 60-41 to boost its winning streak to 37. First-year starting quarterback Nick Myers completed 12 of 18 passes for 331 yards and six touchdowns, in addition to running nine times for 99 yards.

*Four teams stretched their winning streaks to 36: West De Pere (De Pere, Wis.) defeated Hortonsville (Wis.) 36-9; Ithaca (Mich.) routed St. Louis (Mich.) 70-0; Regina (Iowa City, Iowa) scored all of its points in the first half to blank Wapello (Iowa) 35-0; and Boylan (Rockford, Ill.) rolled past Belvidere (Ill.) 57-0.

*Bellevue (Wash.) won the battle of the state's top two Class 3A teams by throttling No. 2 Mount Si (Snoqualmie, Wash.) 49-10 for its 33rd straight victory.

*Trinity (Louisville, Ky.) also notched its 33rd victory in a row with a 38-7 verdict against Male (Louisville, Ky.) as Travis Wright completed 25 of 37 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns.

*Failing to post its 33rd straight win, Norfolk Catholic (Norfolk, Neb.) was nipped by Pierce (Neb.) 20-19.

The high-flying Clairton (Pa.) football team accounted for two big numbers during Friday night's 54-6 rout of California (Coal Center, Pa.).

The biggest number was 600. The Bears are only the ninth team in Pennsylvania history to notch 600 victories, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. They also raised their nation-leading winning streak to an even 50 games - nine short of the state record.

Coach Tom Nola told the newspaper, "It is more impressive that we won 50 games. That is unbelievable. Fifty? It's not like we aren't playing good teams. It is hard to say how difficult of a feat that is."

    * Hornell (N.Y.) stretched the second-longest active winning streak to 42 games with a 45-13 victory over Wayland-Cohocton (Wayland, N.Y.), refusing to allow rain to dampen its homecoming festivities.

    * Waunakee (Wis.) boosted its winning streak to an even 40 games by blanking Portage (Wis.) 41-0 as senior quarterback Will Decorah threw for 286 yards.

    * Truckee (Calif.) picked up its 39th straight win with a 35-0 victory over Elko (Nev.).

    * The Webb City (Mo.) streak reached 34 games with a 48-7 victory over Republic (Mo.). That also gave the Cardinals, who scored on their first four possessions, their 85th consecutive regular-season triumph.

    * Right on Webb City's heels, Maryville (Tenn.) posted its 33rd consecutive victory by blanking Heritage (Maryville, Tenn.) 51-0. The Rebels ran just six plays in the first quarter, scoring on four of them to insure a happy homecoming.

    * Four teams remain log-jammed in seventh place by recording their 32nd straight wins. They included: Boylan (Rockford, Ill.), which blanked Freeport (Ill.) 42-0 with the help of two blocked punts; Regina (Iowa City, Iowa), which rolled past Eddyville-Blakesburg (Eddyville, Iowa) 52-14; Ithaca (Mich.), a 49-6 victor over Merrill (Mich.) as Travis Smith passed for 271 yards and three touchdowns and ran for three touchdowns; and Martinsburg (W. Va.), which defeated Morgantown (W.Va.) in a state headliner 56-28.
  • Still not committed to a college, Yulee (Fla.) senior running back Derrick Henry continued to raise his stock with an outstanding season-opening performance against Gainesville (Fla.).

Though the Hornets suffered a 51-28 loss, Henry ran 31 times for 336 yards - including an 80-yard touchdown. The powerful 6-foot-3, 240-pounder set a Jacksonville, Fla., area record with his 33rd straight game of 100 or more yards and he also has a career total of 8,200 yards - No. 3 in Florida history, according to Jacksonville.com.

His next target is former NFL star Emmitt Smith, who ran for 8,804 yards.

Josh Smith, Christian Academy of Knoxville

The Christian Academy of Knoxville (Knoxville, Tenn.) football team rolled past Darlington Road Academy (Rome, Ga.) 42-23 on Saturday, but the victory was costly.

The unbeaten Warriors, who are defending Class 3A state champions, lost star wide receiver Josh Smith, who broke his collarbone attempting to make a diving catch. Coach Rusty Bradley told the Knoxville News-Sentinel that Smith will be sidelined for between six and eight weeks. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound speedster already has committed to the University of Tennessee.

The Warriors had rolled to a 35-9 lead by halftime, but after Smith was hurt in the third quarter they failed to score in the final 18 minutes. They also lost three fumbles and threw one interception in the second half.

The good news is that the Warriors' other standout wide receiver, senior Davis Howell, caught 11 passes for 178 yards and set a state record with 241 career catches. Quarterback Charlie High completed 33 of 42 passes for 438 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Maryville faithful will be able to watch the Rebels in person or on ESPN2 on Aug. 26 against rival Alcoa. The Sunday game date didn't deter the teams.

College football games played midweek. College basketball games that start past bedtime.

There's no doubt: Television is a powerful medium.

The latest example comes from Tennessee, where rivals Maryville (Tenn.) and Alcoa (Tenn.) will play a Sunday game, which will be broadcast on ESPN2 as part of the network's coverage of high school football.

As reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Aug. 26 game is part of ESPN's opening weekend coverage that covers 26 teams from 15 states from Aug. 24-26. Maryville has won the past two Class 6A state championships and has a 29-game win streak, while neighboring town Alcoa has won 12 state titles compared with Maryville's 14.

It's one of the nation's grandest rivalries, but some wondered if the game was appropriate on a Sunday, when it would interfere with church services. Local ministers were consulted before the teams agreed to the game.

Maryville coach George Quarles told the newspaper that the game was "too big of an opportunity" to pass up, and "A lot of people that I trust, as far as my spiritual life goes, they gave me peace that church doesn't have to be Sunday at 10 o'clock. It can be other times. That's what I ultimately went with."

According to the report, another factor could come into play: the weather. The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association does not allow games or practices when the heat index on the field reaches 105 degrees.

The noontime start in August, coupled with the fact that Maryville will be unveiling its new synthetic-turf field, could present a problem. Game officials said they have discussed the issue with ESPN.

Games between University (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Trotwood-Madison (Trotwood, Ohio) and Gilman (Baltimore) and Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati), which is ranked No. 19 in the MaxPreps Preseason Top 25 Early Contenders, also will be played that Sunday on ESPN and ESPNU, respectively.
