Highly touted junior kicker/punter
Marshall Morgan of Archbishop McCarthy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) has made a verbal commitment to sign with Georgia instead of Florida State or Florida, the other two finalists on his recruiting list.
"I have a guaranteed spot right away as a freshman instead of redshirting," Morgan, one of the nation's top-rated kicking prospects for the 2012 class, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "And I like that it's the SEC, a lot bigger games, more watched and it's preparing me for the NFL."
If Morgan (6-3, 195) sticks with his non-binding commitment and signs with Georgia next February, he will follow another south Florida kicker to Athens, rising Bulldogs senior Blair Walsh, who kicked at Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
Rising 6-3 senior
Tyler Cameron, who is expected to be one of the state's top-rated quarterbacks next fall for Jupiter (Fla.), has received offers from Boston College, Illinois, Louisville, Marshall, Rutgers and South Florida. The strong-armed Cameron, who missed the final three games of his junior season because of a shoulder injury, said he plans to make a verbal commitment before the start of the 2011 season.
Defensive end-linebacker
Eric Kinsey, who has transferred from Northwestern (Miami) to Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.), last week received an offer from Nebraska.
THE NEXT BRISSETT?Jacoby Brissett had a magnificent career at Dwyer and now is headed to UF, but his graduation might not leave as big of a hole at quarterback as some might expect.
Faton Bauta from Brooklyn (N.Y.) Poly Prep has moved to Palm Beach Gardens and into Dwyer's district. The 6-3, 225-pound Bauta, who has offers from Maryland and Pittsburgh, recently registered the third-highest rating (101.85) at the Miami Nike SPARQ Combine.
POWERHOUSE SHOWDOWN ON HORIZONGeorge Smith, who last month retired as the long-time head football coach
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), still is working his magic as the school's athletic director.
Smith announced last week that defending Class 5A state champion Aquinas will play California powerhouse
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) in Fort Lauderdale Sept. 23. De La Salle won the California Interscholastic Federation Open Division championship last season and has been crowned the mythical national champion six times.
"The interest should be monumental," Smith told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, adding that the game is expected to be televised nationally on one of the ESPN networks.
