Chicago schools sweep at Hardaway Hoop Fest

Can Simeon play its way back into the national title race? The Wolverines beat No. 7 Southwind of Memphis on Saturday night and have upcoming games against Oak Hill Academy and rival Whitney Young.
A pair of Top 10-ranked programs from Chicago took the floor in Memphis as part of the Penny Hardaway Hoop Fest on Saturday.

Both will return to the Windy City with victories against local foes also ranked in the Top 10 of MaxPreps.com's Xcellent 25.

In the first Chicago-Memphis showdown, MVP Jahlil Okafor provided 16 points as No. 4 Whitney Young beat No. 10 White Station 61-40. The victory improved Whitney Young's record against ranked teams to 5-1. The Dolphins are 13-1 overall and have won their last five games by 20 points or more.

White Station suffered its second loss in five days and will likely be knocked out of the Xcellent 25 for the first time this season next week.

In the nightcap, No. 8 Simeon escaped with a 55-53 win over No. 7 Southwind. A late 3-point attempt by Marquette signee JaJuan Johnson rimmed out as Chicago improved to 2-0 on the day.

Jabari Parker, a recent Duke commitment, led Simeon with 21 points. The Wolverines began the season as the nation's top-ranked high school team but a pair of losses (due in part to a less-than-100 percent Parker) have put a lid on much of the early hype.

Whitney Young and Simeon meet Jan. 26 in what may be the most highly-anticipated meeting ever between the Chicago Public Schools League rivals. Both teams will also participate in next weekend's Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. Whitney Young will face No. 3 Long Beach Poly (Calif.) on Saturday while Simeon meets storied Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) on Monday.

Around the country

* A special season continued Saturday for No. 13 Bishop Montgomery (Torrance, Calif.), who stayed unbeaten (19-0) with a 74-63 win over No. 14 St. John Bosco (Bellflower). The Knights also manhandled a solid Serra (Gardena) program 58-34 on Friday night, allowing just two points in the fourth quarter.

* No. 2 Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) overcame a halftime deficit to notch a 63-59 victory over a talented Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.) squad at the Brandon Jennings Invitational outside of Milwaukee. BYU-bound sharpshooting guard Nick Emery led the Knights with 20 points.

Harrisons, No. 2 Travis escape at Hoopfest

Star twins Aaron and Andrew Harrison combined for 46 points Friday night as national No. 2 Fort Bend Travis (Richmond, Texas) escaped with a 78-76 win over Ballard (Louisville) at the annual Marshall County Hoopfest in Benton, Ky.

The event is held at Marshall County High School's Reed Conder Gymnasium, a storied venue with a seating capacity of over 6,000.

Aaron led Travis with 28 points against Ballard on a night that featured several nationally-ranked teams and high-profile players:

* Top-ranked 2013 prospect Andrew Wiggins finished with 29 points as Huntington Prep (W.Va.) – ranked No. 1 in MaxPreps.com's Academy Top 10 – rolled to a 76-59 win over Memphis East (Tenn.).

* Academy Top 10 No. 4 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) stormed past Curie (Chicago) 72-39 despite the best efforts of 6-9 junior sensation Cliff Alexander, who put up 26 points.

Travis returns to action Saturday at the Hoopfest against Madison Central (Richmond, Ky.). Oak Hill meets No. 9 Southwind (Memphis, Tenn.) and Wiggins and Huntington Prep face Briarcrest Christian (Eads, Tenn.).

No. 3 Prestonwood falls as Julius Randle leaves with injury

Fresh off a major tournament win at the McDonald's Texas Invitational, Duncanville knocked off No. 3 Prestonwood Christian (Plano) 58-48 in the featured Saturday game at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest.

But Duncanville's hot start wasn't the story of the night as prized recruit Julius Randle of Prestonwood Christian limped off the floor late in the first half and did not return. Reports from Sandra Meadows Arena indicated it appeared to be a foot injury.

Reached by text late Saturday night, Prestonwood Christian head coach Chris Mayberry declined to comment on Randle's status.

Randle is a 6-foot-8, 235-pound power forward ranked No. 4 in the MaxPreps Class of 2013 Top 100. He led the program to a 27-4 record as a junior, the TAPPS (Texas private schools) 5A state title and the prestigious City of Palms Classic title.

The Lions have already been hit with a major injury this season as super sophomore Mickey Mitchell, a 6-foot-7 point-forward, suffered a torn ACL while playing quarterback for the PCA football team. He is expected to miss the entire 2012-13 hoops campaign.

For Duncanville, the victory over Prestonwood Christian was affirmation that the one-time national power is back under first-year head coach Danny Henderson, who led Marcus (Flower Mound) to repeat Class 5A state titles in 2010 and 2011.

Other nationally-ranked teams in action

* No. 9 Southwind (Memphis, Tenn.) knocked off Jonesboro (Ark.) 60-46 on Saturday night in the final of the Rumble on the Ridge in Forrest City, Ark., winning that event for the second year in a row. The Jaguars improved to 4-0 on the season.

* Joel Berry, Florida's reigning player of the year, poured in 39 points as No. 17 Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) topped Dr. Phillips (Orlando) 64-52 at the Hoops Exchange Thanks for Hoops showcase.

* No. 19 DeSoto (Texas) bounced back from its loss to Duncanville last week by handing Jarell Martin and Madison Prep Academy (Baton Rouge, La.) a 63-59 as part of the Thanksgiving Hoopfest.

* No. 23 Callaway (Jackson, Miss.) is learning how to play with a target on its back, escaping with a 50-48 win over Gulfport at the Capital City Hoops Challenge. The Chargers dropped their opener earlier this month and have had a fight in three subsequent wins leading up to Saturday's nail-biter. Elite sophomore prospect Malik Newman led the way against Gulfport with 21 points.

Harrison twins, Wiggins headed to Marshall County Hoopfest

Small town, big-time event.

Tiny Benton, Ky., population 4,197 according to Wikipedia, will once again play host to the Marshall County Hoopfest – annually one the nation's premier early-season high school basketball showcases.

The Hoopfest will be held Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1 at Marshall County High School and will feature a bevy of nationally-ranked teams and players.

Of particular interest may be twin brothers Aaron and Andrew Harrison of Fort Bend Travis (Richmond, Texas). The Harrisons own the top two spots in the MaxPreps Class of 2013 Top 100 and will choose between Kentucky and Maryland later this week. Should the Houston-area duo pick the Wildcats, the Hoopfest will be an extremely hot ticket as UK fans converge to get a glimpse of their future backcourt.

Fort Bend Travis will play Ballard (Louisville, Ky.) on Friday night and Madison Central (Richmond, Ky.) on Saturday.

Another star on Kentucky's radar is Class of 2014 top-ranked prospect Andrew Wiggins of Huntington Prep (W.Va.). The 6-foot-7 wing and his Express will also play two games in Benton, taking on defending Tennessee Class AAA state champ Memphis East and Briarcrest Christian (Eads, Tenn.).

The Marshall County Hoopfest is a staple on the schedule of defending national champ (Academy Top 10) Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.). Steve Smith's Warriors face five-star 2014 prospect Cliff Alexander and Curie (Chicago) on Friday followed up by a showdown with Southwind (Memphis) on Saturday.

Adding to the UK flavor of the event will be Wildcat verbal commitment Derek Willis and Bullitt East (Mt. Washington, Ky.) taking on Hopkinsville (Ky.) in another Saturday matchup.

Pastner's success at home continues with Nick King

Memphis head coach Josh Pastner continued his recruiting roll with hometown prospects Monday when Nick King of Memphis East (Tenn.) cast his lot with the Tigers.

The decision came at a morning press conference at Memphis East.

King, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward, checked in at No. 44 in the August update of the MaxPreps Class of 2013 Top 100. He joins fellow Memphis high school product Markel Crawford of Melrose in Pastner's 2013 recruiting class.

The current Tiger roster is stocked with highly-touted Memphis products. Tarik Black, Joe Jackson and Adonis Thomas were all high school All-Americans at city programs. The 2012-13 Memphis roster will feature six homegrown talents.

King's stock soared late in the 2011-12 season as he helped Memphis East catch fire and capture Tennessee's Class AAA state title, averaging 24 points and nine rebounds per game in state tournament play.

Along with sophomore star Keelan Lawson, King and the Mustangs will once again be among the headliners in Memphis' loaded high school hoops scene – along with Southwind, White Station, Ridgeway and Melrose – and certainly on the national rankings radar come November.

King chose the Tigers over Tennessee, Texas and Vanderbilt.

Sizing up City of Palms Classic field

Prestonwood Christian and Julius Randle will return to the City of Palms Classic in December after topping Grace Prep in an all-Texas final in 2011.
City of Palms Classic organizers unveiled the field for their 2012 event Monday and – as expected – it has all the ingredients to be considered the top high school tournament in the country once again.

Defending champion Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas) and star forward Julius Randle headline a cast of 26 teams headed to Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers, Fla., Dec. 18-22.

An in-depth preview can wait as the event is still four months away, but here is our attempt at seeding the 16 tournament teams and participants and matchups for the City of Palms Signature Series and Sunshine Series:

Buried lead?

There was a bit of a bombshell included in the City of Palms' announcement with the inclusion of Prime Prep. The Dallas charter school – founded by Fort Myers native Deion Sanders – will apparently be led by former Grace Prep (Arlington, Texas) head coach Ray Forsett and include former Grace Prep stars Emmanuel Mudiay, Karviar Shepherd and Jordan Mickey.

Along with Baylor-bound 7-footer Isaiah Austin, Forsett led that group to a 27-4 record last season and No. 11 final national ranking by MaxPreps. Grace Prep reached the finals of the 2011 City of Palms Classic before losing to Randle and Prestonwood Christian.

Prime Prep, slated to participate in Texas' public school ranks in the University Interscholastic League (UIL), is embroiled in some controversy back home, surprisingly dropping its varsity football program this fall and being ousted from District 11-3A in all sports at all levels.

If Forsett's move and subsequent talent relocation goes as planned and highly-touted prospects Mudiay, Shepherd and Mickey are all eligible to play this season, Prime Prep would warrant a higher seed in our informal look at the field above.

Simeon, Southwind to headline inaugural Chicago hoops event

The Windy City will try and flex its high school basketball muscle against a field of national powers at the inaugural Chicago Elite Basketball Winter Classic in December.

Three-time defending Class 4A state champion Simeon (Chicago) and Whitney Young (Chicago) are teaming to host the event Dec. 1. Simeon, led by top junior Jabari Parker, is a contender to earn the preseason national No. 1 ranking after going 33-1 in 2011-12.

De La Salle (Chicago) is the third area team scheduled to participate.

"To play locally, in our backyard, in front of Chicago fans and against a national power is a terrific opportunity," Simeon coach Rob Smith said. "Plus, it's Jabari's [Parker] last year. The more opportunities fans have to see him play at home, the better."

Simeon traveled to Memphis for Penny Hardaway's Hoopfest in January, beating local powerhouse Southwind. A rematch is expected to take place at the Chicago Elite Basketball Winter Classic and should be one of the 2012-13 season's most highly-anticipated games.

Southwind spent much of the season in the national rankings behind the play of JaJuan Johnson and Johnathan Williams III before an unexpected early exit from the postseason.

Joining Southwind from out-of-state will be four teams featured in MaxPreps.com's final Xcellent 25 national rankings – No. 3 Milton (Ga.), No. 6 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), No. 13 DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) and No. 24 Lone Peak (Highland, Utah).

"This will be tremendous exposure for the players in Chicago, each competing team and the city of Chicago," Whitney Young head coach Tyrone Slaughter said.

Additional teams, matchups and venue will be announced at a later date.

Bianca Cage drills Tennessee-record 13 3-pointers

Bianca Cage of Southwind (Memphis, Tenn.) had a Senior Night she won't soon forget on Friday when she drilled a state-record 13 3-pointers during an 86-22 rout of Kirby (Memphis, Tenn.).

She shot an outstanding 13-of-20 from beyond the arc and finished with a career-record 48 points.

Coach Stan Gatlin told the Memphis Commercial Appeal, "It was a special night. We had a good little crowd and everybody was going crazy. It was pretty spectacular."

* In boys basketball, senior guard Sam Meyer drilled 12-of-13 3-point shots en route to 47 points as Totino-Grace (Fridley, Minn.) raced past St. Francis (Minn.), 90-59.

The Spartan Palace at White Station High School in Memphis, Tenn., will host Penny Hardaway's Hoopfest Friday and Saturday.

The event features five nationally-ranked teams and is headlined by a Saturday night showdown between No. 7 Simeon (Chicago) and No. 9 Southwind (Memphis).
