  • With the close of the prep football season, recruiters, as well as players, have turned their attention back to the recruiting carousel.

In the Tampa Bay area, several players have made recent announcements about their college selections while other players, that seemingly had a college choice picked out, are taking another look. Along those lines, Alonso (Tampa) standout defensive end Anthony Chickillo has reopened his recruitment.

Chickillo, 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, verbally committed to Miami during the season but re-thought that option when coach Randy Shannon was fired Nov. 28. Since then, Chickillo turned his attention to Florida, only to see coach Urban Meyer step down in early December.

Chickillo, who registered 18 sacks during his senior season, remains a target of North Carolina, South Florida and he still plans to take an official visit to Miami. Chickillo's father and grandfather both played at Miami.

Meanwhile, a pair of former linebacker teammates have made their college choices known.

Freedom (Tampa) linebacker Keith Lewis has verbally committed to Mississippi. A 6-foot-1, 215-pounder who led Freedom with a little more than 100 tackles and three sacks this season, Lewis selected Ole Miss over Nebraska, South Florida and West Virginia.

Lewis' former teammate Anthony Harrell has verbally committed to Wake Forest. Harrell, who played his senior season at Jesuit (Tampa), helped lead the Tigers to an 11-1 season and the Class 2A region finals. Harrell transferred to Jesuit from Freedom to follow his father James Harrell, who also left Freedom to become the head coach at Jesuit.

Anthony Harrell collected 98 tackles for Jesuit during his senior season.

Other recent commitments include Lakewood (St. Petersburg) junior standout defensive end Dante' Fowler deciding on Florida State. A 6-foot-4, 235-pound speed rusher, Fowler topped 100 tackles and 10 sacks for Lakewood in 2010.

Also, Jesuit (Tampa) offensive lineman Arturo Uzdavinis (6-foot-7, 270 pounds) verbally committed to Tulane, Spoto (Riverview) safety Donald Smith (6-foot-3, 212 lbs.) has committed to Iowa State and East Lake (Tarpon Springs) wide receiver Tyler Higbee will play at Western Kentucky.

In the still being recruited category, Pasco (Dade City) standout safety Jamie Byrd recently visited Boise State and came away with an offer. Hillsborough (Tampa) wide receiver Charles Lovettis being recruited by Colorado State, Duke and Cincinnati.

And Hernando (Brooksville) defensive end Thomas Bronson, who notched 14 sacks in 2010, has received an offer from Appalachian State.

Also, Tampa Prep basketball player Devontae Morgan has received a scholarship offer from Butler University. Morgan, a 6-foot-3 guard who helped Tampa Prep reach the state finals last season, is off to a 20-point per game average this season.
