Floyd County (Floyd, Va.)After 17 years, the name atop the Virginia High School League record book will change when it comes to career scoring.
senior Caleb Tanner
came up big Thursday night in an 81-62 playoff win over Giles, and in the process became the all-time leading scorer in VHSL history.
The 6-foot-2 guard scored 36 points in the win to make it to either 2,713 or 2,711 career points - both of which are records. The Roanoke Times states
he's at 2,713 and Tanner's career page on MaxPreps says 2,711. Either way, Stacy Ervin of Twin Springs is no longer the man atop the list, but he still came to attend the game and congratulate Tanner.
"I really appreciate him," Tanner said. "That just shows how good of a guy he is. He’s a class act. For him to drive all the way up here to see me break the record, that’s very classy."
The record-breaker came with 37.4 seconds left in the first quarter. Sure, it was great to break the record, Tanner said, but it's the playoffs, so wins are maybe just as important.
“I’m just glad we stayed away from elimination, to be honest with you,” Tanner told the newspaper. “The past three years we’ve been knocked out early in the playoffs. I’m just happy to be able to move on to the next round.”
