nation's longest win streaks came to an end Saturday nightOne of the
, but that was just a small part of the fun as several nationally-ranked teams went down or received serious tests.
Here is a rundown of the highlights:
* At the Fort Bend ISD Outback Tournament just outside of Houston, Fort Bend Bush (Richmond, Texas)
knocked off rival and Xcellent 25 No. 2 Fort Bend Travis (Richmond)
57-49. Travis was playing without Kentucky-bound point guard Andrew Harrison
, who left Friday night's game against Terry (Rosenberg)
with a knee injury. Senior point guard ShawnDre Jones
earned tournament MVP honors.
* At the Gridley Invitational in Northern California, Bullard (Fresno)
stunned No. 8 Salesian (Richmond)
60-54 to take the title. Senior Corey Silverstrom
led Bullard – who ended Long Beach Poly's
season a year ago – with 19 points. Salesian had won the crown at the Gridley Invitational three years in a row.
* In another NorCal showdown, No. 12 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose)
won on the road at No. 16 Sheldon (Sacramento)
, 71-65. The Monarchs received yet another big performance from do-it-all senior forward Aaron Gordon
, who finished with 24 points.
* No. 3 Lone Peak (Highland, Utah)
got revenge over defending Class 4A state champ Orem
, who defeated the Knights right around this time last year. Lone Peak ran away with a 56-34 win behind 26 points from star guard Nick Emery
* John Davis
tallied 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks as No. 11 Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia)
over 2012 Class AAAA runner-up Lower Merion (Ardmore)
, 70-66. Syracuse-bound wing B.J. Johnson
pumped in 29 for Lower Merion. We are legally obligated (maybe not) to mention that Lower Merion is Kobe Bryant's alma mater.
* After being left out of the preseason national rankings, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)
moved in last week at No. 18. The Monarchs lived up to that and then some Saturday at the Ocean View Tournament of Champions, blasting Trinity League rival JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano)
in the final 87-66.
