A seasoned veteran and a youthful newcomer claimed championships during the 34th annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif.

Edward Cheserek, a senior from St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.), became the fourth boys' repeat champion when he crossed the 5,000-meter finish line in 14 minutes, 59 seconds. He got a late start this fall due to emphasis on preparing for the SAT and did not take charge until about the last 400 meters, according to Phil Grove of MileSplit.

On a perfect sun-splashed day, Cheserek was pushed by Sean McGorty of Chantilly (Va.), who placed second in 15:05. McGorty, who was tenth last year, had run 5,000 meters five times under 15 minutes in previous meets this fall.

    Anna Rohrer, Mishawaka

Sophomore Anna Rohrer of Mishawaka (Ind.) captured the girls crown in 17:25 even though she had to make up ground due to a tumble about 300 meters into the race. She is the first non-senior to win Foot Locker since 2007 and stamped herself as a national figure for the next three years.

Second place, at 17:29, went to Catarina Rocha, a senior from Peabody Veterans Memorial (Peabody, Mass.).
  • Eighth-grader Sydney Zambrotta exploded for a Long Island-record 63 points on Tuesday night while leading Upper Room Christian (Dix Hills, N.Y.) to a 78-17 girls basketball rout of Our Savior New American (Centereach, N.Y.).

The 5-foot-8 point guard made 24 field goals, one of them a 3-pointer, and 14 free throws to eclipse the previous record of 60 points by Jennifer Mitchell of Hempstead (N.Y.).

Zambrotta, who entered the game with a nation-leading 44-point scoring average, transferred to Upper Room Christian in the fall from North Babylon (N.Y.). She is starting with four girls who never previously had played organized basketball, first-year coach Rebecca Stevens told MaxPreps.

Stevens said Zambrotta "is an extremely good ball-handler and ambidextrous, which gives her a big edge. She can score from the top of the key with a 3-pointer or go inside. She has the ability to see the floor really well. She definitely does have speed and scored on a lot of fast-break layups last night."

*Tuesday also was a big night for Greta Tamasauskaite, who scored 57 points as Grace Academy (Matthews, N.C.) rolled past Kennedy Charter (Charlotte, N.C.) 83-57. It placed her No. 4 for single-game scoring in North Carolina history. The state record is 61 by All-American Shea Ralph of Sanford (Fayetteville, N.C.) in 1995.
