Senior defensive end Tyler Pasterski may look like a "mountain man" before the West De Pere (De Pere, Wis.)
football team ever loses a game. He started letting his beard grow out in the spring and has vowed not to shave it off until his team loses.
The Phantoms lived up to their nickname on Friday night by escaping with a 12-7 victory over previously unbeaten Seymour (Wis.) to extend their winning streak to 35 games (7-0 this year).
With a big smile, Pasterski told Todd McMahon, editor of the De Pere Journal, "I don't have to shave it yet."
Pasterski made certain the beard - and the streak - would continue to grow by tackling Brett Rottier for a three-yard loss on third-and-one from the West De Pere 44-yard line. Then a pass breakup gave the Phantoms possession and they ran out the final 2:23.
Great defenses on each side stifled outstanding offenses. West DePere entered the game with a scoring average of 56.3 points and a winning margin of 49.7. Seymour had averaged 41.2 points, but was limited to 119 yards. The second half was scoreless.
The West De Pere defense made plays all night.
