  Manny Ramirez Jr. hits grand slam, 2-run double in title game

  The senior slugger did a great imitation of his famous father, Manny Ramirez Sr., when he blasted a grand-slam home run and two-run double this week to spark IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) to a convincing 9-1 victory over Desert Ridge (Mesa, Ariz.) during the championship game of the Cleats Sports Classic Invitational in Mesa, Ariz.
  
  IMG won just one of four games during pool play and was seeded just No. 11 out of 12 teams in the finals. However, it roared past four opponents by a 48-16 margin to capture the title.
  
  Coach Jason Elias told Perfect Game, "All year long, these guys have been battling and they've been so stinking close and I knew it was coming - I just didn't know when. Fortunately the bats just erupted over these last four games."
  
  During the tourney, Ramirez batted .522 (12-23) with two homers, three doubles, two triples and 15 RBI. Mitchell Gallagher batted .621 and Trevor Courtney .524.

  NCAA basketball coaches can burn up phone lines

  Phone lines are buzzing today between Division I college basketball recruits and players who have completed their sophomore year of high school.

  The governing NCAA passed new rules - which took effect on Friday - allowing the coaches to call or text message recruits who are headed into their junior year. The rule emphasizes relationship building between college coaches and prospects with hopes to limit influence of third parties. This extends to social media where private messages will be allowed. Public messages still are prohibited.
  
  Chairman Mike Alden explained, "The Leadership Council recognized the evolving nature of communication with students as well as the importance of building solid relationships with prospective students athletes. It appeared that we had previously regulated ourselves away from that relationship building with these young people, unintentionally allowing third parties greater access than our coaches."
  
  In the past, more stringent regulations had brought strong penalties against coaches, even costing some of them their jobs.
  
  With the new rule, a player like Andrew Wiggins, the MaxPreps National Sophomore Player of the Year from Huntington Prep (W.Va.), might think about getting a new phone plan.

  Milton-Winter Park highlights Hoops in Overdrive Shoot-Out

  Austin Rivers and Winter Park will face off<br> with Milton once again at Hoops in Overdrive.

  Three of the nation's top eight teams and 11 Top 100 seniors will converge on Centennial High School in Roswell, Ga., Dec. 30, 2010-Jan. 1, 2011 for Kenn Littlefield's Hoops in Overdrive Shoot-Out.
  
  The featured game is a dandy – No. 2-ranked Milton and its "Big Three" of Dai-Jon Parker, Julian Royal and Shannon Scott take on No. 7 Winter Park and Duke-bound superstar Austin Rivers.
  
  The third nationally-ranked participant is No. 8 Norcross. The Blue Devils will face Southwest Dekalb on New Year's Eve.
  
  In addition to Parker (No. 58 in MaxPreps.com's 2011 Top 100, committed to Vanderbilt), Royal (No. 27, Georgia Tech), Scott (No. 23, Ohio State) and Rivers (No. 2, Duke), seven other elite seniors will be featured;
