  • Football recruiting news and notes from around the country:

    * Texas continued its impressive haul in the Class of 2013, securing the nation's 58th best prospect, according to MaxPreps, when cornerback Antwuan Davis committed this past weekend.

According to YNN-TV, Davis, a standout at Bastrop (Texas), which is a little more than 35 miles from Austin, had more than 30 offers despite missing most of last season because of a stress fracture in his back.

    * Union (Tulsa, Okla.) lineman Dalton Rodriguez was highly sought after by many of the top programs in the Midwest. The 6-foot-7, 255-pound had offers from the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Iowa State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, according to the Tulsa World, but he finalized his choice of Oklahoma on Sunday.

"Once they offered me it was an easy decision," Rodriguez told the newspaper. "Now I can just focus on my last year of high school football."

    * Hampton (Va.) standout Deon Newsome followed in his father's footsteps, committing to Virginia Tech, according to HRVarsity.com. His father, Myron Newsome, played for the Hokies in the mid-1990s.

The versatile Newsome played several positions for the Crabbers last season, including quarterback, running back and receiver on offense, as well as linebacker and cornerback defensively. He projects as an offensive player at the next level.

    * Also, Wayne Hills (Wayne, N.J.) quarterback Kevin Olsen was selected as the MVP of the recent New York City Elite 11 camp. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Olsen is ranked No. 37 overall in the Class of 2013 by MaxPreps. He competed against nearly 60 other quarterbacks for an invitation to the Elite 11 Finals in July, according to Wayne Today.

"It was a great experience going head-to-head against some of the country's top quarterbacks," Olsen told the newspaper. "I'm pleased with my performance."

Olsen, who reportedly has more than 30 Division 1 scholarship offers, passed for nearly 1,700 yards and 20 TDs last season in leading the Patriots to an 11-1 record.
  • Jacob Goldberg, a senior at Pine Crest (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), truly is one of a kind.

With a resume' second to none, Goldberg was selected Wednesday as the 2012 national winner of the National High School Spirit of Sport Award by the National Federation of State High School Associations. The award recognizes student-athletes for their athletic spirit as well as academic accomplishment.

Goldberg's list of accomplishments is overwhelming, and especially so considering he is legally blind and has Tourette's syndrome.

"This is a young man whose vocabulary does not include the words, ‘I can't," Pine Crest Associate Athletic Director Jim Foster said in the NFHS release. "Instead, he simply finds a way to persevere without complaint. He has constantly used his misfortunes as a platform to selflessly help others."

Goldberg maintains a 4.56 grade-point average and has been dual-rolled at Florida Atlantic University since 2009. He is involved with several school clubs and has won numerous academic awards, including the Florida Lions Club International Award.

Also, as a varsity letterwinner in cross country, he helped Pine Crest to a district title and a regional runner-up finish. Goldberg also is a distance runner in track, and he has competed in nine half-marathons and four triathlons.

In addition, Goldberg volunteers at an Alzheimer's Day Care center and co-founded a charity in 2007 with his sister, Rachael. The "Together We See" foundation has raised more than $45,000 since its inception to help provide summer camp opportunities for blind and disabled youth.

Goldberg also organized a 5K fundraiser just over a week ago that raised an additional $20,000 for the foundation. Of note, he did all the organizing and secured the sponsors for the event by himself.

Goldberg will be honored with a presentation at the school on March 5, and he will be recognized at the NFHS Summer Meeting in Nashville, Tenn., on July 8.

The NFHS also recognized eight sectional winners of the spirit award. Nominations for the award are made by NFHS member associations. The winners are selected by a committed comprised of state association staff.

    Section 3: Goldberg
Section 4: Alysia Bennett, Sullivan (Ind.)

The Oregon Ducks came away with a double-flip from two of Fort Bend ISD's top recruits in Fort Bend Elkins (Missouri City, Texas) wide receiver Chance Allen and Fort Bend Hightower (Missouri City, Texas) athlete Bralon Addison. Allen was the first of the day to sign between the duo after flipping to the Ducks from his Oklahoma State commitment. With Allen, dressed in full Oregon gear a short time later, Addison dropped his commitment to the Texas A&M Aggies for the Ducks. Addison's signing with the Ducks caused swift reaction from fans and players alike from all parts of the region and the country.

National Signing Day Decisions by Uncommitted Headliners

In statewide interest, there were two major National Signing Day decisions to be made by Brandeis (San Antonio) safety Colin Blake and Skyline (Dallas) wide receiver Thomas Johnson. Blake, the country's No. 13 safety according to MaxPreps, chose to make his college home in Tallahassee at Florida State. Blake had also considered TCU and Oklahoma after decommitting recently from Texas A&M.

Johnson decommitted from the Texas Longhorns just after participating in the Under Armour All-America Game and came down to a Signing Day decision in which he selected the Texas A&M Aggies. Johnson, the No. 94 overall recruit and No. 8 wide receiver according to Max Preps, selected the Aggies over the TCU Horned Frogs and the Oregon Ducks.
