The torch has been passed in Missouri girls basketball, as legendary coach Herb Webster is retiring.
As reported by The Kansas City Star
, Webster no longer will be manning the bench for Kearney (Mo.)
, and he leaves with the most girls basketball wins in state history.
He posted a mark of 742-447 as a girls coach and an overall record of 903-566 during his 45-year career. In 33 seasons at Kearney, he went 560-330, according to the newspaper.
And as with any highly successful coach, Webster deflected all of the credit.
"I never scored a basket from the bench," he told the newspaper. "I just sat there. It's really all about the kids, so it's not Herb Webster's record. It's about the kids and what they've done."
The 742 girls basketball victories puts Webster 26th all-time nationally, according to the record book
of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
