Jerron Love was a national name in basketball circles before ever playing a high school game.
Despite his Bronx roots, Jerron relocated and enrolled at
Clovis West (Fresno, Calif.) last fall. He was featured in an ESPN The Magazine story in February where writer Josh Dean described Jerry Love – Jerron's father – as eccentric and hyper-involved. Jerry hasn't been shy about touting his son as one of the top 2015 prospects in the land.
After averaging around 12 points and six assists per game as a freshman and helping Clovis West go 21-7, the 5-foot-10 guard is on the move again – this time to resurgent national powerhouse
St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.).
According to Jerry, the cross-country transfer isn't all about basketball with proximity to his mom and other family members in New York being at the top of the list. Jerron also has a pre-existing friendship with Gray Bee guard and fellow rising sophomore
Isaiah Briscoe.
"It's more of a strict academic situation and we hope it will be good for his development," Jerry said.
Jerron is playing this summer with the Oakland Soldiers 16U squad. According to Jerry, Arizona, Baylor, Connecticut, Fresno State, George Mason and UCLA have been in contact about the young phenom.
Jerry insists that the early hype he helped cultivate for Jerron hasn't been a burden.
"I think he has handled it pretty good," Jerry said. "Anything that has been negative we have made it a positive and tried to learn from mistakes."
In addition to Love, St. Benedict's will welcome in four other talented newcomers this fall;
Michael Young, a 6-8 senior transfer from
Hudson Catholic (Jersey City, N.J.), Terrill Green, a 6-7 junior, highly-touted 6-11 freshman Rodney Miller and fellow frosh Nicholas Washington, a 6-5 native of Puerto Rico.
