It took a hurricane to stop Team USA 18U from scoring runs in the COPABE Pan American games in La Paz, Mexico, but it still managed to capture the gold medal after finishing undefeated in the tournament.
According to the Team USA website
, the team was expected to play Cuba in the championship game on Sunday, but the expected landfall of Hurricane Odile resulted in the cancellation of the contest mid-game.
Team USA was leading Cuba 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning when officials canceled the game. USA was given the gold medal after finishing 8-0 in tournament play.
During tournament play, Team USA was practically unstoppable. A 15-0 win over Ecuador on Thursday, a 5-4 win over Cuba on Friday and a 10-0 win over Mexico on Saturday gave Team USA a 110-5 run differential in the eight tournament games.
Against Ecuador, Dazmon Cameron
hit a pair of home runs and finished 2-for-3 with seven RBIs. He finished the tournament with 19 RBIs. Logan Tolbert
and Luken Baker
combined for a no-hitter, finishing one walk away from a perfect game. Tolbert got the win, striking out three in four innings.
Against Cuba, Team USA needed a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win. Nick Madrigal
singled in the seventh and scored on Trent Clark
's base hit. Clark set a new Team USA record with 20 RBIs during the event.
Against Mexico, Kyle Molnar
went seven innings and pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks. Elih Marrero
had a home run and three RBIs to pace the USA offense.
Clark finished as the team's top overall hitter with a .565 average. Ke'Bryan Hayes
also batted over .500 at .542, while Madrigal led the team in runs scored with 17. Molnar was 2-0 with 11 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Kolby Allard
was 1-0 with 10 strikeouts.
