  • The Pensacola Catholic (Fla.) Crusaders captured their second straight Class 4A championship in Florida with a 7-5 win over Monsignor Pace at Jet Blue Stadium in Fort Myers on Tuesday. Could a national championship be next?

Following a two hour and 38-minute rain delay and extra innings, the Crusaders got a two-run double from James McGhee in the top of the eighth to take the lead. Cooper Jones then shut the door on Monsignor Pace by recording all three outs in the bottom of the inning.

The victory capped a 30-0 season for the Crusaders, marking the first time a Pensacola-area team had completed an undefeated season, according to the Pensacola News Journal. Pensacola Catholic has won 35 straight games dating back to last season.

"Winners are guys that continue to compete and do whatever they need to do and stay in the game to give their team an opportunity to win," Catholic coach Richard LaBounty told the News Journal. "What is special about this team is it was never about themselves. It didn’t matter who the hero was. It didn’t matter who got the big hit, as long as somebody did it."

The Crusaders have been No. 1 in the Xcellent 25 national baseball rankings since April 15 when they took over the top spot from Jesuit (Tampa), which had been No. 1 the previous three weeks.

While the high school baseball season won't conclude for another month in some parts of the country, the Crusaders will likely stay at the No. 1 spot. No. 2 Owasso (Okla.), also undefeated at 36-0, completed its season two weeks ago.

Dwyane Wade poses with Archbishop Carroll senior Nicole Muxo, whom he surprised at her senior ball on Friday night.

The poor high school gents at Archbishop Carroll (Miami).

Imagine trying to be the big man on campus – or at the very least impressing your date at senior ball. You buy the fancy clothes and dinner, score a cool ride to pick up your date, supply a luscious bouquet of flowers or a sweet corsage.

    The he shows up.

    The Heat is on.

    Dwyane Wade

He is Heat starting guard and future Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade, whose specialty is stealing the ball for breakaway dunks and who on Friday stole the show by surprising Carroll senior Nicole Muxo at the senior prom on Friday.

Muxo made a sweet YouTube video and asked Wade months ago to be her date and Wade was gentlemanly enough to decline only because the Heat are in the middle of defending their NBA title.

However, with Friday off thanks to Miami's quick disposal of the Chicago Bulls, Wade surprised Ms. Muxo and the entire Carroll class by attending the dance at La Jolla Ballroom in Coral Gables. For good measure, he presented her roses.

As if his presence wasn't enough.

According to the Miami Herald, Wade actually called Muxo moments before walking into the prom to tell her to have a good night. He was right outside. He then walked in for just an extra surprise factor.

Wade danced with Muxo and stayed almost an hour. Ms. Muxo did have a "legitimate" date Laurent Chaumin who good-naturedly told the Herald: "At least we both know how to dress."

Wade said "I'm the third wheel. I'm like both their dates," then later Tweeted: "I had a blast at Prom. Never be 2 scared to ask."

I was able to spend time with Wade at a Gatorade Replay event in Chicago two years ago and found him down to earth and genuine and fun. This just backs up all those notions.

Mike Walmer and Orlando Christian Prep took on Neumann-Goretti at the prestigious Spalding Hoophall Classic in January.

The Orlando Sentinel detailed Tuesday the story of Orlando Christian Prep (Fla.) three-sport athlete Mike Walmer, who survived a terrifying car accident last week en route to school.

According to the Sentinel, Walmer – who helped OCP go 22-8 and reach Florida's Class 2A state championship in February – lost control of his vehicle Friday morning in part due to wet conditions and slammed into a light pole.

And that's when the really scary part happened.

The Sentinel reports that the impact tossed him out of a window and 65 feet through the air.

"While I was in midair, I asked God to please help me before I hit the ground," Walmer told the Sentinel. "I was bracing myself for the fall. And I felt like God just grabbed me and laid me down to the ground as soft as he could."

Incredibly, Walmer didn't suffer a broken bone in Friday's accident but did break his nose during OCP's state playoff run two months ago.

Walmer was well enough Monday night to receive the school's male athlete of the year award, according to the Sentinel. He was a starter and role player for the Warrior basketball team, which features Division I recruits Adonys Henriquez (Miami commitment), Justice Montgomery (American) and Dmitri Thompson.

Under head coach Reggie Kohn, OCP has emerged as one of the top programs in Florida with state titles in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Organizers in the Middle East hope to bring head coach Rob Fulford and Huntington Prep to a tournament in Dubai next year.

If an ambitious plan by United Arab Emirates-based MPAC Sports comes to fruition, several high school basketball powerhouses from the United States could be headed to Dubai in June of 2014.

Coaches from Lone Peak (Highland, Utah), Huntington Prep (W.Va.) and Montverde Academy (Fla.) confirmed they have been approached by the basketball development company about participating in the MPAC Elite International Tournament.

According to a promotional video posted on YouTube in April (see bottom of page), MPAC plans to include teams from the Middle East and North Africa in the tournament.

The timing of the event raises questions being well outside the window of the traditional high school basketball season. It's likely that state governing bodies would need to give member schools the green light to participate.

Sources indicate work remains to be done in the way of financing travel and finalizing the participants involved.

MPAC organizers did not respond to MaxPreps.com's requests for comment this week, but instructor Ebenezer Noonoo – a Chicago native and former player at UIC from 2005-08 – teased the promotional video on his Twitter account April 26.

According to Wikipedia, Dubai is a city of more than 2 million people known for its oil wealth and subsequent large-scale and often lavish building boom. Tourism and high-end retail attractions have also flourished.

United Arab Emirates is located along the southern base of the Persian Gulf and shares borders with Saudi Arabia and Oman.

All three American programs linked the MPAC Elite International Tournament are coming off highly-successful seasons.

Both Lone Peak (Xcellent 25 high school rankings) and Montverde Academy (Academy Top 10 rankings) were recognized as national champions by MaxPreps. Led by the top amateur prospect in the world Andrew Wiggins, Huntington Prep went 30-3 and was ranked No. 5 in the final Academy Top 10.

It didn't take long for Eugene "Geno" Smith to make his presence felt for Miramar (Fla.) in 2005.

As a ninth-grader, Smith started the as the team's JV quarterback. After one (dominant) game against South Broward, Smith was called up to the varsity squad.

"We knew we were going to bring him up," said current Miramar head coach Damon Cogdell. "But we didn't know it would be that fast."

    Geno Smith, Miramar

Smith would go on to lead Miramar to 29 wins over the next four seasons and capture a host of personal honors along the way.

His tenure at Miramar would foreshadow his outstanding career at West Virginia in which he threw for 11,662 yards and 98 touchdowns.

For Cogdell, Smith's tremendous gifts -- athletic and otherwise -- were apparent the moment he took the field against South Broward that that August day in 2005.

"He had it. He always had a strong arm, was always a sharp kid. Smart, talented kid on and off the field," Cogdell said.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, Smith's position in the draft is uncertain. He could fall to the second round, or he could go No. 3 to the Jaguars, as this mock draft suggests.

It's going to be an especially proud weekend for Cogdell and the Miramar community. Smith's teammate at Miramar and West Virginia, Steadman Bailey, is also projected to be off the board by the end of the third round.

Geno Smith could be the first quarterback selected in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  • Highly-touted 2014 guard Grayson Allen said it all via Twitter on Wednesday, announcing he will take his game to Duke following his senior year at Providence (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Tabbed the No. 25 overall prospect in the Class of 2014 by 247Sports, Allen earned first team Class 3A All-State honors from SourceHoops.com after leading Providence to a state title and 31-1 record.

Against Coral Springs Christian in February's Class 3A state championship game, the 6-foot-4, 195-pound standout led the Stallions with 31 points. He pumped in another 27 against the Community School of Naples in the semis and averaged around 19 points per game on the season.

"I saw Grayson this past summer in Myrtle Beach at a Big Shots event and he caught my eye," said Justin Byerly, a MaxPreps contributor and Director of Recruiting for BasketballElite.com. "Huge hands for a 6-3 (at the time) shooting guard. Possesses elite athleticism and a pure shot. Great playmaking ability and will fit perfect in the Duke system under Mike Krzyzewski."

Allen is playing on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer with Georgia-based Southern Stampede.

Duke has high hopes for its 2014 recruiting class. The Blue Devils are expected to be strong contenders for elite prospects Tyus Jones, Jahlil Okafor and Stanley Johnson, among others.

    Kermit Whitfield

The nation's leading sprinter, Levonte "Kermit" Whitfield, won't be able to defend his Florida state championships due to tendinitis behind his right knee, according to Buddy Collings of the Orlando Sentinel.

The senior from Jones (Orlando, Fla.) placed third in the 100-meter dash regional preliminaries in Jacksonville on Thursday with a time of 11.38 seconds, far off his nation-leading spring time of 10.15. Then he scratched from the 200 prelims and the 100 finals.

Whitfield, who also won the Class 2A 100 as a sophomore, told Collings, "I was hurting. I didn't want to put too much pressure on it. It's sad, but sometimes you've got to think about the future. I'm hurt. Nothing is more important than my health."

Whitfield has signed to play football and run track at Florida State University.
  • Anquan Boldin is on the move again. This time to help his former high school.

The Super Bowl champion receiver for the Baltimore Ravens, who last month signed with the 49ers, is hosting the ninth annual Q-Fest which today features a celebrity basketball game at Pahokee (Fla.).

Bolden tweeted out that there was a full house at the school's gymnasium a day after he hosted a golf tournament at Ballenisles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens.

The festivities end Saturday with a Fun Day in the Park at Pahokee's football stadium. According to the Palm Beach Post, the stadium was named after Boldin for his contributions in helping to renovate it.

Among other NFL stars scheduled to attend the Q-Fest are Michael Irvin, Ray Rice, Larry Fitzgerald and Kurt Warner.

"My community involvement has always been a priority and people who know me understand my commitment," Boldin said.

It's always good to see professional athletes giving back. Every bit counts.

Former 49er Ricky Watters is the new head coahc at Oak Ridge in Orlando.

Former NFL running back and one time Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, Pa.) star Ricky Watters is the new head coach at Oak Ridge (Orlando, Fla.), according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel.

Watters, who won a Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers, replaces Elijah Williams, who left to take a college job.

He inherits an Oak Ridge squad that finished 6-4 last season after going 7-4 in 2011.

Watters is only the latest former NFL standout to become a high school football coach this offseason.

Former Eagles receiver Irving Fryar, Watters' teammate for two seasons in Philadelphia, was recently named head coach at Robbinsville (N.J.), while former Jaguars tight end Tony Boselli became an assistant at Providence.

Four-time Pro Bowl selection Joey Porter may soon join the ranks. He's been linked to the head coach vacancy at Foothill (Bakersfield, Calif.).

  • Denard Robinson made headlines just a few weeks before the 2013 NFL Draft, but not for the reason he hoped.

The former Michigan quarterback received the honor of throwing out the first pitch at Tuesday's game between the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Video of the pitch immediately went viral and, as we all know, that's usually not a good thing. Take a look below.

Despite the backlash, Robinson has kept a sense of humor about the incident. He even sent out an apologetic tweet to his former high school baseball teammates at Deerfield Beach (Fla.).While he may not play quarterback in the NFL, Robinson is a superior athlete and is projected to be taken in the sixth round of the draft in late April.
