11:31 a.m. EST Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.) linebacker Jordan Zumwalt has switched from Stanford to UCLA.
There were rumors that Zumwalt may be defecting for USC, which could really use a linebacker of his caliber after missing out on Manti Te'o and Vontaze Burfict.
Zumwalt is a nice pick-up by UCLA. Rick Neuheisel has landed a well-balanced, talented crop that is battling for second among Pac-10 schools behind USC.
This from MaxPreps Southern California Correspondent Martin Henderson:
Zumwalt, the Orange County Register’s defensive player of the year and a Los Angeles Times all-star, signed with UCLA after having spent the season as a Stanford commit.
Zumwalt (6-4, 220), made 164 tackles in just 12 games – a 13.7 average – and anchored a defense that helped the Chargers remain the No. 1 team in California throughout most of the season before losing to Servite in the Southern Section Pac-5 finals, 16-6.
In that game, playing tight end, he caught a touchdown pass. Zumwalt had 3.5 sacks, and recovered and caused two fumbles against one of the toughest schedules in the state. Edison (13-1) finished No. 16 in the Xcellent
25, No. 6 nationally in the Freeman Rating.
It’s a blow for Stanford and a major coup for UCLA after visiting it and USC over the weekend. “He committed to Stanford, and the last two or three weeks USC and UCLA put on a fullcourt press,” coach Dave White said on Tuesday.
“He’s as confused as all heck. ... I told him to make that decision before his bed hits the pillow.”
