On Friday the 16-year-old junior from Bronxville (N.Y.) broke the national outdoor record in the 1500-meter run in 4 minutes, 10.77 seconds while placing sixth at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Running unattached, she was the youngest athlete ever to compete in a Drake Relays invitational event.

The young phenom actually lowered her own national record, which was 4:11.01 - a time she ran last July in Barcelona, Spain.

Cain told the Des Moines Register, "I really tried to keep up. I think based on my training I can do even better next time ... I felt so tired. They were running so fast."

Indeed, they were running so fast because the winner, 2012 Olympian Jenny Simpson, was clocked in a Drake Stadium record time of 4:03.35 for her third consecutive title. She also earned $25,000 in prize money.

* At the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Sean McGorty, a senior from Chantilly ( Va.), set a meet record with an outstanding winning time of 4:04.47 in the mile run.
