A Las Vegas basketball icon will be honored with a tournament bearing his name in December.

The inaugural Tarkanian Classic will be held Dec. 19-22 at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. The event is loaded with top teams from Arizona, California, Illinois, Nevada and New York and a tip of the cap to legendary former UNLV Runnin' Rebel head coach Jerry Tarkanian.

Defending California Division I state champ Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and Nevada Class 4A state champ Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) headline the 17-team field. Both storied programs finished in the Top 10 of's Xcellent 25 in 2011-12.

Other powerhouses in the field include Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.), Compton (Calif.), Morgan Park (Chicago), Our Savior New American (Centereach, N.Y.), Pinnacle (Phoenix) and Sheldon (Sacramento).
