Covering High School Sports in America
One of the most prolific scorers and offensive weapons in high school girls basketball has committed to UConn.

Saniya Chong, a tremendously skilled and savvy 5-foot-9 guard from Ossining (N.Y.), told UConn coach Geno Auriemma Saturday she had made up her mind.

Chong had also visited Ohio State and Louisville and considered Maryland before picking the Huskies. She told The Journal News she was excited, relieved and happy.

"All the colleges, basically every college has the same concept," she told the newspaper. "But UConn, I just really fell in love with it – the players, the campus, how close it is to home, the staff, the coach."

Chong was ninth in the country in scoring last season at 33.3 per game. Of her 277 baskets, 100 were on 3-point makes and she made 78 percent on free throws.

She's far from just a shooter, however, and is probably a better penetrator and distributor. She averaged 9.7 assists per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds and 5.0 steals per game.

Chong has scored 2,060 points in her career and Ossining is 61-9 in that time.
