Thirty-five years ago, Steve Neff took over as head girls basketball coach at NorthWood (Nappanee, Ind.), believing it would be an interim post for one year.

However, on Tuesday he guided the Panthers to milestone victories No. 599 and 600 in what long ago developed into an outstanding career. They defeated Homestead (Fort Wayne, Ind.), 59-50, and Hobart (Ind.), 70-39, during the Bankers Classic Holiday tournament in Middlebury, Ind.

Neff told the Goshen News, "Six hundred is just a number. It started out as a one-year gig, but I have just kept at it. Over the years the girls have been great. Hanging around them has helped keep me young. I would not continue to do this if I didn't like it."

Northridge (Middlebury, Ind.) coach Doug Springer noted, "He is a great coach to have in the NLC (Northern Lakes Conference). Since I started at Northridge, every time we play NorthWood, I use the pregame time to pick his brain as much as possible."
