The first recruit from the class of 2016 is officially off the board.

Robert Washington, a running back from SouthLake Christian Academy (Huntersville, N.C.), committed to Mississippi State over the weekend.

Washington confirmed his commitment to MaxPreps.

"They recruited me hard and they watched me in person," he said.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound freshman had an offer from Ole Miss even before beginning high school. He told MaxPreps that he has also heard from Alabama and LSU this fall.

Despite battling injuries, Washington had a very productive ninth-grade campaign, rushing for 1,017 yards and 11 touchdowns on 89 carries. He also played in the secondary for SouthLake Christian Academy, registering 21 tackles.

The team features several other productive freshmen, including Will Eason and Conner O'Donnell.

Washington has a good shot to make the MaxPreps Freshman All-American Team, which will be unveiled after the season.
