Consider this: the last time the Flora (Columbia, S.C.)
boys basketball team won a playoff game, George H.W. Bush was president, a gallon of gas cost $1.14 and "Cheers" was the top show on television.
That was in 1991, but the Falcons ended a playoff drought of more than two decades Tuesday with a 69-57 victory against Crestwood (Sumter, S.C.) in the first round of the state playoffs.
During that stretch, Flora had lost 15 consecutive games in the postseason. As reported by The State
, Matthew Howard
led the victory push with 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
"We responded to the challenge tonight, took the monkey off our backs," second-year Flora coach Leon Brunson told the newspaper.
Flora advances to meet Wilson (Florence, S.C.) in the second round of the Class 3A division on Friday.
