Consider this: the last time the Flora (Columbia, S.C.) boys basketball team won a playoff game, George H.W. Bush was president, a gallon of gas cost $1.14 and "Cheers" was the top show on television.

That was in 1991, but the Falcons ended a playoff drought of more than two decades Tuesday with a 69-57 victory against Crestwood (Sumter, S.C.) in the first round of the state playoffs.

During that stretch, Flora had lost 15 consecutive games in the postseason. As reported by The State, Matthew Howard led the victory push with 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

"We responded to the challenge tonight, took the monkey off our backs," second-year Flora coach Leon Brunson told the newspaper.

Flora advances to meet Wilson (Florence, S.C.) in the second round of the Class 3A division on Friday.
