Dave Campbell's Texas Football lists Cade Foster of Carroll (Southlake) as the former record holder with 263 extra points between 2006 and 2009. However Adolfo Cordero
of Refugio (Texas)
recently surpassed that total, according to the Victoria Advocate, and has 272 heading into Refugio's first round playoff game against Nixon-Smiley (Nixon).
Hot on Cordero's heels is Devin O'Suillivan
of Mildred (Corsicana, Texas)
, who was reported earlier in the season as having set the state record for extra points. However, that report was based on a story by Lone Star Gridiron that listed 227 extra points as the state record. O'Sullivan kicked one extra point in Mildred's game last week and edged past Foster with 264 extra points, but Cordero beat him to the official record by one game.
Then there is Chance Nevarez
of Aledo (Texas)
, who is nearly 30 extra points behind Cordero with 243. Nevarez set a state record earlier this year with 115 consecutive extra points. That was until it was determined that Drew Brown of Carroll (Southlake) had set the record over a year ago and had a streak of 172 consecutive extra points before missing one early this season.
Now Nevarez has a chance to break the record again. He has extended his streak to 167 in a row entering Aledo's first-round playoff game with Burleson. Given Aledo's penchant for scoring (the team set a state record for points during a regular season with 682), Nevarez could catch Cordero and/or O'Sullivan for the career extra points record, depending how deep their respective teams go in the playoffs.
Nevarez, who tied a Texas state record with 13 extra points in one game, also has a chance to break the national record for extra points in a season. The current mark is held by Tyler Lewis of Albemarle (N.C.), who kicked 112 extra points during Albemarle's record breaking season that saw it score 903 points during a 16-game season. Aledo is currently on pace to score 1,091 points for a 16-game season. Nevarez needs 21 more extra points to tie the record.
The Texas state record for extra points has been broken twice this year, but who will be the final holder of the state mark will depend largely on how deep three teams advance through the state playoffs.
