It seemed like a smart play at the time, up 55-53 in the waning seconds of a game with first place in the Channel League on the line.

Christian Widmer of San Marcos (Santa Barbara, Calif.) tracked down a loose ball after his team got a stop in the final seconds of overtime Friday night, and he lofted it past half-court. He probably figured it would kill so much time that crosstown rival Santa Barbara (Calif.) would either not get a shot off or have to take a ridiculously difficult attempt at the buzzer.

Santa Barbara's Noah Burke took that ridiculously difficult shot after he ran back to get the bounding ball.

Here's what happened after that, and it led to an improbable 56-55 win for Santa Barbara:
