Futsum Zienasellassie

Futsum Zienasellassie, one of the greatest distance runners in Indiana history, announced this week that he will attend Northern Arizona University in the fall.

The 5-foot-8, 140-pound senior from North Central (Indianapolis, Ind.) has won the Indiana state cross country meet three times and will bid for his fourth consecutive title in the 3200-meter race later this spring. Last fall he also won the Nike Cross Nationals and was second in a photo-finish during the Foot Locker Nationals.

Futsum will join his brother, Bahlbi, at Northern Arizona. The reigning Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year also considered Oklahoma State, Indiana, Purdue and Butler.

Futsum won a remarkably fast 3200 race at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational on April 7 in a national-leading mark of 8 minutes, 47.75 seconds. He was one of 16 runners to break nine minutes in the race.
