Joe McDonald scored 49 points Friday night to spark Landon (Bethesda, Md.) to an exciting 83-80 overtime victory against Episcopal (Alexandria, Va.).

The 6-foot, 190-pound senior, who also grabbed 18 rebounds, sent the game into overtime by drilling a 3-point basket from well beyond the arc as time ran out. He then helped ice the game in overtime by making four straight free throws at the end of the final 4 minutes.

McDonald is a George Washington University recruit.

- The Hill-Murray (Maplewood, Minn.) girls basketball team easily defeated Mahtomedi (Minn.) 61-45 on Jan. 6, but when the same teams tangled Friday, the score was quite different.

It took a school-record 51-point outburst by 6-foot senior guard Tessa Cichy to enable the Pioneers to slip past Mahtomedi 103-96 in a wild four-overtime contest. She also drilled a school-record 24 free throws in 27 attempts.

Four apparently was her lucky number, because Cichy played the entire fourth quarter and all four overtimes with four fouls.
