Covering High School Sports in America
On the same day the winningest football coach in Utah state history retired, his counterpart in Ohio did the same.

Bob Lutz announced he was stepping down from his position at Ironton (Ohio), a post he held for the past 39 years. His coaching career also included three seasons at St. Joseph Central (Ironton, Ohio).

Lutz also retired after the 2005 season and returned one year later, but he told The Herald-Dispatch that won't happen this time.

"This is it," Lutz, 68, told the newspaper. "I won't be coaching anywhere anymore."

Lutz exits with a 381-91-5 overall record, a mark that included 28 playoff appearances and two state championships and six state runner-up finishes.

In other coaching news around the country:

* Midwest City (Okla.) football coach Steve Huff has resigned his position to return to his roots at the new high school in College Station, Texas. Huff coached at Midwest City for six years, compiling a 60-12 mark. The Bombers advanced to the postseason in each of those seasons. Huff coached in the College Station area prior to his post at Midwest City.

“It's an opportunity to open up a new high school and that's something I've never done before,” Huff told The Oklahoman. “I enjoyed being in the area before, but more than anything, it's challenging and exciting to be in an area and go from the ground up.”

* DeSoto (Texas) football coach Claude Mathis is moving to the college ranks and the University of Houston. He resigned after four seasons with the Eagles, posting a record of 36-14 with four playoff appearances. He will be the running backs coach for the Cougars.

* Also moving on to a college position is Liberty (Bealeton, Va.) mentor Tommy Buzzo, who will join his son at Central Connecticut State. Travis Buzzo has committed to play offensive line at the university next season. Buzzo coached Liberty for 10 seasons. He leaves with an 89-24 record.
