Deontay Greenberry

Deontay Greenberry told the Fresno Bee this morning that his shocking last-minute switch from Notre Dame to the University of Houston was made because he had chosen the Fighting Irish football program "for all the wrong reasons."

Greenberry led Washington Union (Fresno, Calif.) to a 14-0 record and the Division III state bowl championship. He also set state records with 2,165 receiving yards and 33 touchdowns, earning him California's Mr. Football honor.

The highly-sought wide receiver, who had been firm with his Notre Dame commitment since May, said he had made his initial choice because his cousin, cornerback Tee Shepard, also was going to South Bend. Shepard, who was ineligible his senior year due to transfer rules, is already enrolled at Notre Dame.

The Houston Chronicle noted that Greenberry, who visited Houston on Friday, was recruited by Jamie Christian, newly hired as special teams/wide receivers coach. Christian also had recruited Greenberry when he was an assistant at Arizona State.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly told the South Bend Tribune, "For me, it's hard to be disappointed about someone you never had, or you never coached."
