"Play ball!"
Unfortunately, those words were not heard by four baseball teams in Texas late last week because of a dispute between umpire associations.
As reported by the
San Antonio Express-News, two first-round playoff games were postponed Thursday when an injunction was filed by the Texas Association of Sports Officials against the Texas Collegiate Umpire Association. The San Antonio chapter of the TASO argued the TCUA was not sanctioned to participate in prep games. The TASO apparently also believed they should be working the postseason since they officiated the regular-season games in the area.
"The rules are pretty particular about who can officiate, and we don't believe they're following the rules," Gary Schumann, a lawyer representing the TASO, told the newspaper.
The
temporary restraining order that prevented the games from being played was lifted Friday. According to the Express-News, a court hearing will be held May 14 to address the TASO injunction.
