For the majority of the state, the huge snowfall today is a welcome sight. The ski areas certainly need it. And what student doesn't love a snow day?
The weather also largely has put a halt to the high school sports schedule, for at least Friday. Colorado is not alone, as Nebraska preps action also has been impacted.
Today's marquee basketball game between
Regis Jesuit (Aurora) and
Highlands Ranch, the Nos. 1 and 2 ranked girls teams in Class 5A, respectively, has been moved to 1 p.m. Saturday. That's tentative, as no doubt the rest of the state's schedule is pending additional snow.
Basketball still has two full weeks on the schedule, so there is time to get those games in. The state's swimmers are most affected, though, as nearly all league championships were scheduled for today and Saturday. Since most of the state's school districts are closed today, the meets have been condensed to a one-day Saturday event.
If they don't happen tomorrow, Colorado High School Activities Association officials earlier in the week designated Monday as the completion day. The league championships represent the final opportunity for swimmers to qualify for the state meets. The Class 5A (Fort Collins) and 4A (Thornton) state meets are scheduled for Feb. 10-11.
* Also postponed today was the
MaxPreps Tour of Champions stop scheduled for
Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch). The tour, sponsored by the Army National Guard, honors the country's top football teams, and the Eagles were to receive their trophy at a 9:45 a.m. pep assembly. No reschedule date has been set yet.
* The Denver Post is reporting that
Luke Del Rio, the son of new Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, has narrowed his school choices to Valor Christian and Cherry Creek. The younger Del Rio is considered a top quarterback prospect after having a breakout season in Florida this past fall.
MaxPreps reported earlier this week that Regis Jesuit and Grandview also were being considered.
* In case you missed it,
Resurrection Christian (Loveland) boys basketball coach Bruce Dick won his 500th career game Jan. 31 with a win against Dayspring Christian. Dick was the longtime coach at Green Mountain before moving on to Rocky Mountain and then RC. According to the CHSAA record book, that total places him fifth all-time. Denver Christian's Dick Katte, who has led the Crusaders since 1964, is tops in state annals with more than 800 wins.
* As reported by The (Colorado Springs) Gazette,
Amelia Schofield of
Manitou Springs earlier this week set a school record for career points scored. Her 21 points against Colorado Springs Christian give her 905 overall, passing the 884 of former Mustangs standout Chelsea Woloszyn.
