Covering High School Sports in America

Kyle Wiltjer and Jesuit have won back-to-back
6A titles in Oregon, but have come up short at
the Les Schwab Invitational.

John McCallum of Prime Time Sports passed along the 16-team field for the Les Schwab Invitational, annually one of the top high school basketball showcases on the West Coast. The 2010 edition is scheduled for Dec. 27-30 at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, Ore.

Headlining the event will be national powerhouse DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) and two-time defending state champions from Nevada (Bishop Gorman) and host state Oregon (Jesuit).

The real intrigue, however, could come from a pair of small-school challengers. Traditionally, the LSI features Oregon's top 6A and 5A programs. But 3A powerhouses Dayton and Horizon Christian have muscled their way into the field and don't be surprised if they pick up some wins.

Horizon Christian captured the 3A state title in 2009-10, beating Dayton in the final. It was the fourth meeting of the season between the league rivals with each team winning two. Both return nationally-ranked standouts and the bulk of their rosters from last year.

Horizon Christian features 6-foot-5, 210-pound wing Jordan Tebbutt, rated No. 17 in MaxPreps.com's Class of 2012 Top 100.

Dayton counters with 6-10 Maika Ostling, another junior who checked in at No. 81 on the same list. The Pirates also return solid contributors in Travis Bernards, Hayden Craig and A.J. Hedgecock.

Jefferson, Oregon's defending 5A state champions, are also in the field but will be a new-look team without Kentucky freshman Terrence Jones.

Jesuit finished No. 22 in last winter's final Xcellent 25 National Rankings and return All-American candidate Kyle Wiltjer (No. 19 in MaxPreps.com's 2011 Top 100), as well as 6-5 senior wing Jordan Akwenuke and 6-2 junior guard Jack Grodahl.

And we couldn't wrap up a rundown of the LSI field without touching on Bishop Gorman, which could contend for a preseason top 10 national ranking. The Gaels are led by junior guard Shabazz Muhammad, ranked No. 4 in the 2012 class by MaxPreps.
