After winning Mississippi's Class 5A state title Friday night, Callaway improved its record with Malik Newman in the program to 82-14.

Regarded as the nation's top junior by, Malik Newman scored 25 points Friday night to lead Callaway (Jackson, Miss.) to a 49-33 win over Vicksburg in the Mississippi Class 5A state title game.

Newman has helped Callaway win a state title in each of his three seasons with the program and the Chargers have emerged victorious in 43 of their last 44 outings dating back to 2012-13.

Against Vicksburg, Callaway led by 21 points entering the fourth quarter and cruised to the three-peat in a low-scoring affair.

Newman hit 7 of 14 field goal attempts and connected on all nine attempts from the free throw line.

Cortez Mitchell and Dontelius Ross added eight points apiece for the champions. Highly-touted sophomore Mario Kegler led the team on the boards with eight rebounds.

The Chargers – ranked No. 22 nationally by MaxPreps this week – finished the season on a 22-game win streak.

Newman averaged 29.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. The 6-foot-3 combo guard tops the 247Sports Composite player rankings and will be tough to beat for National Junior of the Year honors. He was the National Freshman of the Year in 2012 and Sophomore of the Year in 2013.
