Benjie Wimberly

Long before he was salsa dancing in the end zone at MetLife Stadium, Victor Cruz roamed the often-muddy football field behind Paterson Catholic (Paterson, N.J.), playing for head coach Benjie Wimberly.

In the spring of 2010, Paterson Catholic announced that it would be closing its doors permanently due to financial woes. That sent the team's top football players to other programs in the area  - Elijah Shumate and Alquadin Muhammad landed at Don Bosco Prep and were key contributors this season - but left Wimberly without a home.

That is about to change, as Wimberly will be named the new head coach at Hackensack, MaxPreps has learned.

The announcement will be made official at next week's Board of Education meeting.

Wimberly, who is also a New Jersey Assemblyman, takes over for Mike Miello, who retired at the end of last season.

In his last six seasons at the helm at Paterson Catholic, Wimberly guided the Cougars to a 60-3 record, winning four state titles.
