MaxPreps' National Freshman of the Year
will be denied winning similar sophomore honors.
The Greensboro News-Record reported that Harry Giles
underwent left knee surgery this week and will miss his sophomore year at Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.)
. Giles had injured his knee while playing for the USA basketball team during the FIBA Americas U16 Championships in Uruguay.
The 6-foot-9, 210-pound small forward averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds while leading his team to the NCISAA Class 3A state championship.
On his Instagram account, Giles said, "Out of surgery, everything went great. Me and that Hardwood are going to meet up again soon, and I'm going to drive it crazy with this hard work I'm going to put in! #TheComeback."
Coach Keith Gatlin also is optimistic.
He said, "Harry's so young, his body is going to recover quickly. He just turned 15 in April, so he has youth on his side to come back. Everyone we've talked to says he's going to come back better than ever."
