Covering High School Sports in America

Luke Kennard led Franklin (Ohio) past Justin Jackson and HCYA (Houston) at last year's Flyin' to the Hoop. The teams will square off again in 2014.

One of high school basketball's top annual showcase events announced its matchups Thursday.

Flyin' to the Hoop president Eric Horstman didn't disappoint in lining up appealing showdowns between top teams and players.

Flyin' to the Hoop will be held Jan. 17-20, 2014 at Trent Arena just outside Dayton, Ohio.

Reloaded Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) highlights the Friday night action with its cast of Top 100 stars. Rashad Vaughn, Kelly Oubre and the Pilots face Wayne (Huber Heights, Ohio).

Saturday will be capped by a must-see evening tripleheader. Defending New Jersey champ Roselle Catholic meets Ohio Division I semifinalist Northland (Columbus, Ohio), which returns five of its top six scorers from a 28-1 team.

Roselle Catholic-Northland is followed by Luke Kennard and Franklin (Ohio) meeting North Carolina commitment Justin Jackson and HCYA (Houston) in a rematch from last season. Kennard pumped in 32 points for Franklin to outduel Jackson in a 79-65 win last January.

Rounding out the action that night will be a superb point guard showdown between Ohio State commitment A.J. Harris and Dunbar (Dayton, Ohio) taking on Tyler Ulis and Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights, Ill.).

Sunday has plenty to offer with LeBron's alma mater St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron, Ohio) facing another Ohio State verbal pledge in Keita Bates-Diop and University (Normal, Ill.). Perennial Buckeye State contender Garfield Heights (Ohio) is slated to take on No. 1 2014 prospect Emmanuel Mudiay and Prime Prep (Dallas).

Monday's highlights include defending Georgia state champs Miller Grove (Lithonia, Ga.) meeting aforementioned Roselle Catholic and appearances by Huntington Prep (W.Va.) and Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan.) – a pair of programs loaded with future Division I players.

As many as 20 Top 100 prospects will be in action over the long weekend.

The last two No. 1 overall picks in the NBA Draft (Anthony Davis in 2012, Anthony Bennett in 2013) are Flyin' to the Hoop alums. The event draws around 20,000 fans over four days each year.
